The sport of rowing is relatively new to the Bahamas sports circuit but much resources is being invested in small sports says The Bahamas Olympic Committee Secretary General Romell Knowles.

The sports of Wrestling and Judo is being exposed to international competition at the XX Commonwealth Games in Glasgow Scotland, although out of medal contention Cynthia Rahming the Youth Olympic Champion represented the Bahamas very well as she drew a very worthy and experienced opponent. Secretary Knowles said, history and personal best performances is already being made for the sport of Judo and wrestling.

I am pleased with the progress of our Youth Olympic Gold medal winner – Cynthia Rahming said Knowles, Cynthia an honor role student who took a few years of from her studies to improve her techniques for international competition with the hopes of competing in other international competition and capturing a first Judo medal for the Bahamas. D'Arcy Rahming Jr., Cynthia's brother also competed for the first time in International competition for the Bahamas at a Commonwealth Games and represent the Bahamas well. Knowles said the Rahming's story is of special interest to him personally, they are a dedicated sporting family who make a tremendous sacrifice for their sport and the Bahamas. I have witness the many hours of training, the special diet the coaching and the enthusiasm and passion the Rahming's exhibits for their sport - its quite a story says Knowles.

The sport of wrestling will also compete for the first time at a Commonwealth Games, young Rashji Mackey will make Bahamian history when he steps on the mat to represent the Bahamas in the men 74kg competition, he will be coached by Clarence Rolle. Knowles said he is excited that the President of the BOC, Wellington Miller is expending sports in the Bahamas that are on the Olympic Program. We understand that it will take some time and  some degree of patience is required for small sports as they make their mark in International competition.

Secretary Knowles indicated that if Taekwondo was on  the Commonwealth Games program they too would have competed and be apart of this historic team that is assembled at the XX Commonwealth Games –  the BOC is committed to building capacity in all sports and will introduce the sports of Handball, Badminton, Archery and fencing to the sporting curriculum in the Bahamas. We are confident the sports of softball and baseball will return to the Olympic program in 2024 and we welcome the sports of Rugby and Golf to the Olympic family.

Knowles said the Olympic sporting program is growing and building capacity – but he noted we are just as keen on developing other sports such as bowling which recently returned from the Pan Am Festival in Mexico City and improved on their skills and competed at a very high level. The sports of athletics, swimming and boxing is performing well and we will continue to embrace and build on their successes.

The Bahamas competes for the first time in an international rowing event namely the Panam Games Festival over the weekend at the Olympic track at Cuemenco in Mexico City.  The doubles lightweight mens duo of Lex Fountain and Jason Williams came in 2nd in the C finals with a time of 8:05 second over 2000 meters.  For both of the athletes, it was thier first time in the doubles boat and said they saw much potential for the upcoming CAC games to be held in Veracruz Mexico in November.  The duo are coached by two time Olympian and 2007 Panam Games medalist in the doubles lightweight division. Ms. Y. V. Falcon.

The Bahamas is known for Sun, Sand and Sea and will soon know just how good we are in ALL sports.
