NASSAU, The Bahamas – Seems like the future of golf in The Bahamas is secured with young people engaging in the sport coached by professional Bahamian golfers.

On Saturday, January 23, a group of youngsters participated in a golf clinic facilitated by the Bahamas Golf Federation Junior Division – a prelude to the Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic scheduled for January 25-31, 2016 at the world-famous Tom Weiskopf-designed Ocean Club Golf Course on Paradise Island.

The golf clinic, held at the golf course, Queen Elizabeth Sports Centre, involved about 25 children for about three hours beginning at 11:30am.

Instructors were former Bahamian pro golfer Sam Kemp and Georgette Rolle, a two-time Bahamas National Women’s Amateur Champion and LPGA Teach Professional who will be making her third appearance in the Pure Silk tournament.

Also present at the Golf Clinic were Glen Archer, President, Bahamas Golf Federation; Ian Coerbell, board member, Bahamas Golf Federation; Alena Hutcheson, Chairperson, Bahamas Golf Federation Junior Division; and Matt Truax, Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic Tournament Director.

Archer said that the BGF is committed to advancing the junior golf programme in the country as more young people get involved in one of the premier sports in the world.

Kemp and Rolle instructed the juniors in basic golfing techniques like golf grip, golf swing, golf follow-through and perfect putting.

Christopher Knowles, 10, and student of Bay View Academy finds golfing fun and likes to compete with his friends and brothers Alexander, 8, and Michael, 6, who participated in the junior clinic. He wants to better his skills and one day hopes to become a professional golfer.

Tynesha Tynes, 15, of St. John’s College, who says the game comes “natural” to her, started learning to play at the tender age of 7. She is also an aspiring pro golfer. She serves as a volunteer at the Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic.

A total of 108 golfers will compete in the fourth annual Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic.

The Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic offers a purse of $1.4 million, plus a full allocation of points in the Race to the CME Globe season-long competition. The winner receives $195,000 and 500 CME Globe points.

The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) is an American organization for female professional golfers. The organization is headquartered in Daytona Beach, Florida, and is best known for running the LPGA Tour, a series of weekly golf tournaments for the elite female golfers from around the world.

The Pure-Silk Bahamas LPGA Classic is the first on the LPGA season, ending on November 20 at the Gold Course of the Tiburón Golf Club in Naples, Florida.
