This weekend The Lleyton Hewitt Tennis Academy at Albany will host its first junior tennis tournament in The Bahamas.  It will be the second event in The Winterbotham IC Junior Series that proved very popular at its first event in February at The National Tennis Centre.  The IC Junior Series continues through the year with the third event that will be at The Raquet Club at Baha Mar in May.

This series for the young ages of 10’s and 12’s is on a round robin basis to give all players maximum playing experience at this important development stage. The International Tennis Clubs (IC’s) are a worldwide organisation of top tennis players who as well as arranging many senior inter country events also “Give back to the game” and organise junior and development projects in many countries.  In The Bahamas the IC organisation felt a need to develop more local competition and larger development groups without the expense of  juniors going overseas to play tournaments.  The series is sponsored by Winterbotham Trust company. It has a strong emphasis on not only developing tennis ability but building a group of young players who can develop together as friends with a good sportsmanship attitude. This is in the spirit of the IC whose motto is “ hands across the net, friendship across the ocean”.

The Series is already attracting international interest and some strong overseas players are anticipated to be coming to future events. This will further add to the tennis experience for our own players.

Entry forms are available at most tennis centres in The Bahamas including the National Tennis Centre and entries close at 6pm this Wednesday.  The cost of entry for The Lleyton Hewitt Tennis Academy at Albany event is $25 which includes a lunch for the players and two days of play.  For further information and also for submission of entries these can be done by contacting one of the main organisers: Kit Spencer ( kitspencer@hotmail.com and 363-2930), Neil Mactaggart ( neilmactaggart@yahoo.com and 359-0900) and referee Mickey Williams (tenman56@hotmail.com and 557-8307).
