Nassau, Bahamas - Minister of Youth, Sports & Culture Dr. Daniel Johnson is singing the praises of Bahamian athletes after another successful round of Olympic competition.  While many countries with greater resources and bigger teams fail to produce a medal, The Bahamas continues to stand out with a medal count per capita that makes it one of the most successful sporting countries in the world.

Since taking office as Minister of Youth, Sports & Culture, Dr. Johnson came up with the TEAM BAHAMAS concept, which is designed to show every Bahamian how they represent a part of the national team of The Bahamas.

"Team Bahamas is conceptualized to capture the ethos of the Bahamian collective spirit in cementing and galvanizing a national unity in support of the country's culture, people and institutions, as well as intellectual and sports endeavors at home and abroad" said Dr. Johnson.

The success of Bahamian athletes was the inspiration behind formulating a concept that could bring the entire country together as a team.  Athletes continue to prove their worth on the international stage.

Shaunae Miller captured gold for The Bahamas in one of the most unforgettable race finishes in Olympic history.  The Bahamian men's 4x400 meter relay team did not disappoint, collecting bronze medals for their performances.  Chris "Fireman" Brown got much attention from the international sports media who were amazed at his skills and ability, still up to pr with younger athletes, although he is now an Olympic veteran in his 40s.  The track and field team also carried three qualifying high jumpers for the first time - Donald Thomas, Trevor Barry and Jamal Wilson.

Emily Morley made Bahamian Olympic history, competing in single sculls (rowing) - the first time the country has ever had a competitor in this category.  Two-time Olympian Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace and rising star Joanna Evans qualified for three events at the games for the BTC Bahamas Olympic team.

The Olympics was also historically momentous for The Bahamas in that gold medal Olympian Pauline Davis was given the honor of presenting Shaunae Miller with the country's only gold this time around.  Minister Johnson commended Bahamas Olympic Committee President Wellington Miller, and all of the facilitators of the Olympic team, for their sacrifices and efforts in making this all possible.

This kind of success has led to the current evolution of sports tourism in The Bahamas.  Minister Johnson has been working assiduously over the past few years to make this possible, and 2016 has been one of the most successful years thus far.

Some of the prestigious sporting events hosted by the Bahamas this year include: Marathon Bahamas (Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure); LPGA Pure Silk International (Golf) Tour; PGA World Heroes Golf Challenge (hosted by Tiger Woods); Chris Brown Invitational & Track Meet; 60th Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships; NCAA Battle for Atlantis; ESPN Popeye's (football) Bowl; Rugby Sevens - Bahamas/ USA Regionals; World Championships of American Flag Football; CHAMPS - National High School Track & Field Championships; 2016 Olympic Trials; CARIFTA Track & Field and Swim Championships; and Caribbean Islands Swim Championships (CISC).

The Ministry of Youth, Sports & Culture is engaged in talks with Major League Baseball and the National Football League with a view to establishing long term partnerships for The Bahamas.

In light of this, the Ministry proposes to appoint a Games Secretariat to facilitate The Bahamas' hosting of these regional and international events.

2017 is also proving to be an exciting year that will continue to reinforce the development of sports tourism in the country.

The third edition of the IAAF World Relays are scheduled, in addition to the FIFA World Cup of Beach Soccer, the Commonwealth Youth Games, and the Bahamas Games.

"Through Team Bahamas, the entire country becomes a willing and enthusiastic supporter and participant in every venture undertaken by Bahamians to showcase ourselves to the world and to further drive and propel the nation to cohesiveness and strength," said Dr. Johnson.

"Whatever you are, whoever you are, whatever you do, all Bahamians are Team Bahamas!"
