Nassau Rowing Club Prepares for International Competition and Hopes for Expansion

NASSAU, Bahamas - On Saturday, 22 March 2014, Nassau Rowing Club (NRC) held its second annual erg-a-thon at the Club One Fitness Centre in the Sandyport Plaza. Rowers ranging from 13 to 60 years old took to rowing machines to raise money to defray competition costs for the junior rowers competing at the upcoming Miami International Regatta on 5th April. Proceeds would also subsidize the upcoming "Learn to Row" camp this summer.

Beginning at 6am, patrons and donors could sponsor volunteers, including Director of Sport Timothy Munnings, to row in half-hour long shifts. At the end of the erg-a-thon, the NRC contingent rowed exactly 212.213 kilometres, approximately the distance from Nassau to Hawksbill Creek, Grand Bahama. Total distance rowed surpassed last year’s total due to a growing adult section and a robust competitive juniors section, which grew from two to seven this year.

The seven junior rowers will be representing Nassau internationally in the upcoming 41st Annual Miami International Regatta. The NRC has entereda novice boys coxed four and a girls double scull to compete at this year’s regatta. "Our crews are registering competitive times in their races compared with the other crews, says Kyle Chea, Head Coach and Founder of the NRC, “We are hoping for at least one medal in Miami."

All of the current competitors were introduced to the sport by the NRC’s pioneer “Learn-to-Row” programme launched last year. This summer the NRC is bringing back the initiative, where it is hoped that more Bahamians can be introduced to the sport under the direction of Stephanie Ricker, Rowing Head Coach at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY. "Coach Ricker did a great job last year introducing the juniors to rowing,” says Chea, “I'm excited to see how both our club and the sport will grow locally over the coming year.”

About Nassau Rowing Club: The Nassau Rowing Club is a not-for-profit organization, established in August 2012 by six rowing enthusiasts with the aim of developing the premier competitive rowing program in The Bahamas for rowers of all experience, age, and fitness levels.
