More than 11,000 beach soccer players from around the globe will descend upon the shores of Virginia Beach, Va., this weekend to compete in the 2016 North American Sand Soccer Championships (NASSC), one of the world’s largest amateur/pro beach soccer events.

The 23rd edition of this popular competition will feature teams from as far away as Africa, Portugal, Germany, Brazil, Norway and the Caribbean facing off in more than 2,000 matches in front of 200,000 spectators, making it the perfect arena for promoting Nassau as The Bahamas prepares to host the FIFA 2017 Beach Soccer World Cup at the Bahamas Football Association’s (BFA) Beach Soccer and Futsal Facility in New Providence, Nassau, April 27-May 7.

“This is a huge tournament,” said Bahamas Football Association General Secretary Fred Lunn, who will be in Virginia Beach, Va., June 10-12 getting the word out. “It’s an event that brings in over $11 million in hotel revenues in just three days, and The Bahamas will be very visible on every single one of those days.”

A video touting the incomparable beauty of the islands of The Bahamas as well as the country’s diverse recreational and cultural offerings will stream over giant monitors placed strategically throughout the twenty-five block venue over the course of the weekend. Additionally, a high-profile drawing will be held during NASSC finals offering entrants a shot at winning a five-day, four-night World Cup stay at Atlantis, including tickets for Dolphin Encounters and Pirates of Nassau.

“While we’re working on getting the international community ready for 2017 FIFA World Cup in Nassau, we want Bahamians gearing up too,” Lunn said. “Beach soccer is one of the world’s fastest growing sports and it’s a tremendous opportunity to have the World Cup here. Not only is World Cup a global sporting event, but it will be a huge boon for our country’s economy as well. We’d really like to thank the Ministry of Tourism for their support and participation.”
