FREEPORT,
Grand Bahama -- With the change back to Eastern Standard Time having occurred
the weekend before, it was a bright and sunny morning that greeted athletes as
they set up at Taino Beach on Saturday, November 7, 2015, for the 29th running
of the annual Conchman triathlon.
As is
always the case, Conchman attracts competitors from a variety of locales:
California, Massachusetts, Florida, Georgia, Nassau and Grand Bahama to name a
few. This year's race also featured a number of both male and female past
champions who were eager to stay on the podium, preferably on the top step.
Stefan
Laursen came back from California with winning again on his mind. "When
Stefan comes, the race is for second place," commented Grand Bahama's
Romeo Seymour, himself gunning for the win. A fixture on the third place step,
Nassau's Mark Davies was in the mix, along with a strong field of both locals
and tourists of all ages.
The
women's field was equally strong with past winners Vicki Stafford, Elizabeth
Shaddock, Linda Fijol and Kadesha Culmer lining up against each other and past
Top 3 finishers and eager newcomers.
Among
the teams there were large numbers of diverse competitors, ready to swim, bike,
or run and take home a prize in multiple categories including men, women,
mixed, family and combined ages.
The
brisk south-easterly breeze made for sloppy swim conditions, although that
didn't seem to faze fastest swimmers Stefan Laursen (12:08) and Kadesha Culmer
(14:55) who seemingly surfed over top the chop around the 1KM course.
Grand
Bahama can boast of the fastest cyclists on the course: Romeo Seymour (42:30)
and Sylvia Bateman (47:13) took home those honours on the 25KM loop.
Coming
into the 5KM run the toll of swimming and biking started to show on some of the
athletes, whereas others really gained their stride.
With
team competitors alongside the individual athletes the shoreline of Smith's
Point and Taino Beach was filled with runners and walkers all trying to catch a
bit of shade as the sun continued overhead.
Stefan
Laursen caught his stride, posting the fastest run time of 20:33 and came in
for the overall win in a time of 1:15:20. Romeo Seymour followed in second
(1:24:52) and Mark Davies third (1:25:29).
Nassau's
Elizabeth Shaddock ran her way from behind to the top spot, posting a run time
of 25:05 and becoming the overall ladies champ in a time of 1:35:02. Sylvia
Bateman used her strong bike and run to take second place (1:36:14) and
newcomer Wima Stefanutti was steady throughout the day and placed third
(1:37:30).
As
everyone gathered to celebrate post-race, the talk was already about next
year's event. Conchman turns 30 in 2016 and organizers, sponsors and partners
are planning to make it a spectacular race to remember!
“Now
that this year’s Conchman is completed we are really looking forward to
celebrating the 30th year in 2016," said Conchman committee member
Christopher Baker. "It will also be Bert Bell’s 30th year as race
director,” he added.
