If you’re looking for a soccer scholarship in the US and need some advice, look no further than this year’s Grand Bahama soccer camp. Among the star-studded array of guest coaches will be a man who knows the subject backwards.

Chris Kranjc, one of four pro coaches leading the Freeport camp next month, from June 19 to June 23, has a fantastic winning track record and a coaching philosophy to match. He has won numerous Coach of the Year awards at colleges where he has led the soccer program and lots of his players have made All-American team of the year with one making National Player of the Year.

The fact the Sir Jack Hayward camp organisers have landed someone with his credentials makes all the more remarkable that they have also managed to cut the price of the camp almost in half this year. For $100 instead of the usual $175 young people who sign up will be put through their paces by four coaches, each of which is a leader in their field.

It is the best deal in the camp’s 14-year history. But there is a catch – attendance is being pegged at 100 this year and those parents who want their children to take part need to act quickly to ensure all the places are not already filled.

Registration forms are available at Town and Country, Yellow Pine Street, and Barefoot Marketing, West Atlantic Drive, Freeport, as well as at the venue, Freeport Rugby and Football Club on East Settlers Way (evenings and weekends only). Those who sign up get full uniform as well as lunch and refreshments every day.

Chris has been head of the men’s soccer programme at the University of Alabama, Huntsville, for more than a year. For the 17 years prior to that he held a similar position at Hastings College in Nebraska where his team had a 297-67-21 record competing at national level most years and reaching the US national semi finals four times.

Both colleges are part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, an organisation which blazed trails as a pioneer in admitting historically-predominant black colleges and also in admitting women to championship level sport. It places a high premium on character development as well as sporting prowess.

So what is the secret of soccer success? According to Chris the answer is: “Players need to have the right work rate and discipline to really develop. And they must love training and seeing themselves progress in the process."

There will be plenty of skills and tactical training at the c amp, not only from him but also his fellow coaches Abbie Sadler, Robbie Pringle, both from the UK, and Chris Clements, like Chris Kranj, from the US.
