Taylor and Greene among 18 Bahamians with Carifta Standards

NASSAU, Bahamas - Reigning Carifta champions Charisma Taylor and Tamar Greene among 18 local athletes who have attained qualifying standards for this year’s Carifta Games set for St. Georges, Grenada from March 26-28.

Taylor, who won the girls under 18 long jump and triple jump at last year’s Carifta Games in St. Kitts, leads with the way with qualifying performances in four events (100m, 100m hurdles, long jump, triple jump) in the girls under 18 category while Greene has surpassed the mark for the boys under 20 triple jumps three times already for the season. Taylor went over the girls under 18 long jump standard of 5.40m on two occasions, first clearing 5.51m to win at the T-B Flyers Classic on January 16 and then improved to 5.63 to win again at the Club Monica Meet on January 31. At the club Monica Meet she also went over the girls under 18 triple jump barrier of 11.80 with 11.85 to complete a jumps double victory. Taylor is on course to defend her titles in Grenada. In the 100m hurdles, Taylor sped to 13.80 in winning the girls under 18 100m hurdles at at the Club Monica to go under the 14.20 standard.

The St. Andrews College student was more impressive at the Star Performers Meet on Feb 6 when she won the girls under 20 100m hurdles in 14.08. The 2015 World Youth Championships semifinalist will be going for there third gold in Grenada after she fell in the 100m hurdles finals at last year’s Carifta games. Taylor is one of four qualifiers in the girls under 18 100m (standard 12.05) when she sped to a windy 11.94 (wind +4.2m/s) to finish second in the girls under 20 category at the Star Performer meet. With her time she is the second fastest qualifier behind Devin Parker (Bahamas High) who raced to 11.76 (+2.1) to take the girls under 18 title at the Club Monica Meet. Parker also clocked 11.85 (+3.2) in the heats. Kennedy Culmer (Golden Eagles) and 14 year old Megan Moss (Club Monica) have both clocked 12.03 seconds Culmer achieved her times with a tail wind of 3.5 to win the under 18 category at the Star Performer meet while Moss took the under 16 title at Club Monica Meet with a legal wind reading of +1.9. Parker also clocked a qualifier in the the girls under 18 200m (standard-24.60) when she clocked 24.49 to win at the T-Bird Flyer Classic.

Taylor, Parker, Culmer and Moss are among six ladies under 18 division to achieve standards. Doneisha Anderson (Twd Athletics) and Daejha Moss (Club Monica) have cleared the 1.65m standard for the girls under 18 high jump when both leapt to 1.68m to finish first and second at the Odd Distance Meet on January 9.

Eight boys have so far surpassed the qualifying standards in the boys under 18 category with three in the high jump. Fifteen year old Shaun Miller (Bahamas Speed) heads the list with his 2.00m clearance, 10 cm beyond the 1.90 standard, at the T-B Flyeer Classic. Miler has also gone over 1.97 at the Odd Distance in January 9. Kyle Alcine (Ambassadors) and Stony Duncanson (Leap of Faith) have matched the standards twice each. Edward Kemp (RC Athletic) attained the standards in the boys under shot put (15.25) and discus (45.00). The Queen College student surpassed the shot put mark with throws of 15.31 and 16.25 and the discus (45.50 and 47.18) to record double wins at the Star Performers and and Club Monica Meets respectively. Johnny Jean-Jacques (Throwers Inc) also got the standard with 15.31 to finish second to Kemp at the the Star Performers Meet. Denvaughn Whyms (Club Monica) won the boys under 18 long jump with a distance of 7.15 to better the 6.90 Carifta standard.

On the track in the boys under 18 100m Max Azor (Swift Athletics) zoomed to wind-aided 10.69 (+3.7) to go well under the 10.90 on his way to victory at the Star Performers Meet. Branson Rolle crossed the line in 53.55 in the boys under 18 400m hurdles to dip under the 54.20 standard.

Last year’s Carifta boys under 18 triple jump gold medallist Tamara Greene (Jumpers Inc) has cleared the 15.00m standard of the boys under 20 event on three occasions. Greene first leapt to 15.21 (nwi) on his way to winning at the T-Bird Flyers Classic and then improved to 15.29 (+0.8) to triumph at the Club Monica Meet. He also recorded 15.26 (+1.5) to take his third victory at the Star Performers Meet. . Holand Martin is the second qualifier in the event with his 15.08 (+2.1) performer to finish runner up to Greene at the Star Performers Meet.

In the girls under 20 division triple Carifta medallist Brianne Bethel (Golden Eagles) and Serena Brown (Throwers Inc) are the lone qualifiers so far. Bethel bettered the 11.80 standard when she clocked 11.72 (+4.2) to win the girls under 20 100m at the Star Performers Meet while Brown bettered the girls under 20 discus mark of 41.00 on three occasions. She registered her top mark of 48.39 on her way to victory at the T-Bird Classic and then had marks of 45.42 and 53.25 at the Club Monica and Star Performers Meets respectively.

The Bahamas team for this year’s Carifta Games is expected to be selected after the Carifta trials set for the second week of March. At last year’s Carifta Games, Team Bahamas won 31 medals (8 gold, 13 silver and 10 bronze) to finish second the perennial champions Jamaica. Taylor (G U18 long/triple jump) and Shaquania Dorsett (G U20 400m/800) led the way with double gold medal performances. Tamar Greene (B U18 triple jump) Javan Martin (B U18 100m), Tavonte Mott (B U18 100m hurdles) and Deondre Rutherford (B U18 discus) also won gold medals.
