In the words of Kevin Major Jr, “
Today was a good day, no hiccups. It was a good day in The Bahamas Tennis Camp.” With
a 3-0 win over Bermuda , The Bahamas has secured a berth into the
finals with an opportunity to become one of the two teams to move up to
Group II. This is a very exciting time for The Bahamas in The Tennis World
!
Spencer Newman was able to record his first Davis Cup singles win. Spencer defeated Gavin Manders from Bermuda 6-4,6-4. Spencer said that “
today
was better than yesterday and it continues to get better and better for
me. It was nice to get the win finally and to be able to step on the
doubles court. We got the team victory with the sweep.”
Baker also
dispensed Neal Towlson with 6-3,6-2. Teaming up for doubles was Marvin
Rolle and Spencer Newman. They also won against Banscome and Thomas in
straight sets 6-2,6-3. The win today moved The Bahamas one step closer
to their goal to win Pool B and to ultimately win the finals matchup
against a finalist in Pool A. Pool A contains the #1 seeded in the
tournament Jamaica along with the home court favourites Bolivia who are
both performing well. “
By winning today it makes us Number One in the group(Pool B,) even if we lose or win
tomorrow against Trinidad. We go on to play the loser of Pool A which will be either Jamaica or Bolivia.”
The Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association(BLTA)
had great expectations for this team. As this team has a good mix of
veteran players including Marvin Rolle who has represented his country
thirteen times and three time Davis Cup member Kevin Major Jr. The
experience Marvin and Kevin bring is balanced well with the new talent
of Baker Newman and Spencer Newman. They are all hungry for the win and
have a really good shot to win and advance to the next level.
The Captain of the Team Marvin Rolle expressed his view of the upcoming matchup
on Saturday with the runner up of Pool A, “
It will be an interesting match against whomever we play. We like our odds!”
The Team plays Trinidad & Tobago
tomorrow. Please see attached for pictures of our Bahamas Davis Cup Team 2016.
