Top Juniors Compete in the Top International Tennis Tournament in The Region

The Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association (BLTA) has dispatched its U16 national team to San Salvador, El Salvador. The competition began today and will last until Friday,July 29th. The  International Tennis Federation's top junior tournament showcases the best of the best from the Caribbean and Central American regions.  Countries such as Aruba, Guatemala, Honduras, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Jamaica and many others are represented. Players ranked on the ATP Circuit are also participating.

The Bahamas four member  U16 Team consists of Donte Armbrister and Kofi Bowe for the Boys and Sydney Clarke and Afrika Smith for the Girls.  Donte Armbrister and Sydney Clarke both performed well in the U14  JITIC tournament last year as finalist and semifinalist respectively.  Afrika Smith comes into competition seeded sixth, Sydney Clarke is seeded 8th and Donte Armbrister is seeded 11th.  Our youngest player Kofi Bowe is unseeded. The team is ably captained by Mr. Ceron Rolle.

In today’s tournament The Bahamians made their presence felt amongst their international counterparts. Donte Armbrister was up first against Mateo Quiros from El Salvador.  Donte won convincingly 6-0,6-0. Afrika Smith lost to Sofia Chang of El Salvador 2-6,2-6.  Sydney Clarke came on strong and won two matches against Lia Espinal of Dominican Republic 6-3 , 6-1 and Vannelie Menendez 6-2,6-1.  Kofi Bowe played well but lost to Ignacio Cobos of Guatemala 2-6, 3-6.  Both Donte Armbrister and Sydney Clarke have qualified for main draw competition based on today's results.  Afrika Smith and Kofi Bowe will have another opportunity tomorrow to qualify as round robin matchplay ends on Sunday.

The BLTA wishes its team great success as tournament play intensifies and Main Draw Competition begins on Monday.
