The College of The Bahamas School of Communication and Creative Arts is observing the 25th anniversary of Colour of Harmony, a highly celebrated art and music exposition that showcases the talents of COB students in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts.

A signature event of The College that brings together supporters of the arts as well as budding artists, the Colour of Harmony will be held on April 14th, 2014 under the patronage of Their Excellencies Governor General Sir Arthur Foulkes and Lady Foulkes.

As is customary, this year the E. Clement Bethel Award for Excellence in the Arts will be presented. The honourees are cultural icon Mr. Percy ‘Vola’ Francis, founding leader of the Saxons Superstars, and Mrs. Joann Behagg, prominent ceramicist and founder of the Empty Bowls initiative.

Additionally, the School of Communication and Creative Arts will present Mrs. Patricia Glinton-Meicholas, distinguished author and cultural activist, with the Lifetime Achievement Award for her contributions to the development of the arts.

“We have had an impact, especially on the community in the recognition of those performing and visual artists, persons like Mr. John ‘Chippie’ Chipman, Mr. Antonius Roberts, Mr. Maxwell Taylor, Mr. Lou Adams Sr., just to name a few. This encouraged our students to raise their standards to those who were already practicing their craft,” explained Head of the Visual and Performing Arts Department in the School of Communication and Creative Arts Mr. Christian Justilien.

Over the years, the skillfully played strains of classical, jazz and Negro spiritual music and thought-provoking student art work have captivated the College community and the wider public, demonstrating the excellence that is resident in the academy. The Colour of Harmony has become both a celebration of artistic talent and a means of preserving the arts.

The art work on display will include drawings, paintings, ceramics and sculptures.

Chair of the School of Communication and Creative Arts Mr. Haldane Chase expressed confidence in the caliber of the students’ work over the years.

“We who are present today are the beneficiaries of their desire to share those talents, gifts and graces, divinely bestowed, and nurtured by an affectionate community of persons, especially teachers, family and friends,” he noted.

According to Mr. Justilien, the art exposition has served as an important conduit in the Bahamian society.

“Art is in need of a more prominent place in society and the Colour of Harmony is a mechanism that can be used to recognize both students’ work and persons who they aspire to be like in the performing and visual arts,” said Mr. Justilien.

“It is a taste of what their future could look like if they are doing good work at this level. Many of our students have been getting a lot of positive attention and a lot of them get their pieces of art sold. Some of the music students get jobs with bands in the community, so it’s a win-win situation when students get the exposure that Colour of Harmony brings to them,” he added.

The programme, which begins at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, April 14th, is open to the public and will be held on the south-western portico of the Harry C. Moore Library and Information Centre at The College's Oakes Field Campus.
