Nassau, New Providence - The Historic Bahamas Foundation invites you to attend a Swinging Soiree on Saturday, February 1, 2014 from 7:00 to 11:00 pm at the Collins Estate Grounds located on Shirley Street and Collins Avenue.

This Soiree will be held under the patronage of Their Excellencies, Sir Arthur and Lady Foulkes. We are delighted to have Dr. Bernice King, daughter of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., will attend this event as a special guest of the Foundation. The night promises to be a fun filled evening under the stars at Collins.

The Historic Bahamas Foundation and the Historic Bahamas Foundation, Inc. were established as non-profit entities in the Bahamas, and Delaware, USA respectively to support the efforts of restoration and preservation of the historical resources of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas. To this end, the Foundation’s Soiree is intended to raise funds in support of the activities of the Antiquities Monuments and Museums Corporation, the agency mandated to restore, maintain, and preserve historical heritage throughout The Bahamas.

A 1920s jazz-themed cocktail gala will serve as thebackdrop for the fundraiser that re-launches the HBF," said HBF deputy chairman Owen Bethel.

“The HBF also expects to play host to John Franklyn, senior manager in the office of external affairs at the Smithsonian’s 19th museum, the National Museum of African American History and Culture,” Mr. Bethel said. The 1920s period theme is a throwback to one of the country’s most eventful historic periods and was incorporated to introduce the HBF to the public and spark awareness of the importance of conserving the country’s historical treasures.

The corporation is obligated to create and monitor the Historic Register of National Resources including the country’s museums, forts and monuments.

“This will be a tremendous opportunity for the foundation to raise much-needed public awareness and funding for the AMMC and its work to preserve and conserve the national treasures of The Bahamas,” Mr. Bethel said.

“We anticipate a level of support that shows that Bahamians care about our historic places, how they are preserved and ultimately, how they are presented for all to learn about and enjoy.”

The event  will feature cocktails by John Watlins Distillery, live jazz by Ambassah and culinary by Graycliff Chocalatier. Period costume is optional said Nikita Thompson, administrator, HBF.

The AMMC, a quasi-government agency, is the principal heritage conservation agency of The Bahamas. The corporation, said AMMC chairman Courtney Strachan, was enacted through the Antiquities Monuments and Museums Act1998 and came into being on July 1, 1999. AMMC presently falls under the Office of the Prime Minister.

The corporation is obligated to create and monitor the Historic Register of National Resources and manages the following sites:

The Pompey Museum of Slavery and Emancipation; The Balcony House Museum; The Long Island Museum; The San Salvador Museum; Fort Charlotte, Fort Fincastle and Fort Montagu; other historic military fortifications throughout The Bahamas ; National monuments of The Bahamas;National historic preservation programmes; and National aquatic and terrestrial archaeological programmes.
