Nassau, Bahamas - The 27th annual Junior Junkanoo Parade took place on December 13th at 6pm at the Thomas A. Robinson Stadium.

A competitive display of indigenous Junkanoo music, dance and festive costumes by Primary and Secondary Schools in New Providence and visiting Family Islands schools.

Bahamas Ministry of Tourism's website says, 'The Junior Junkanoo programme is very important because it is the life blood for the survival of future Junkanoo. It impacts the students in a way and adds to the school spirit, enhances self pride, builds self esteem and contributes to the overall patriotism of the students. In addition, it provides opportunities for them to learn through their involvement in the programme. It assists students in research, planning, organizing, critical thinking, problem solving and role playing activities and stimulates the development of creativity.

Many children, who have participated in the Junior Junkanoo programme continued their involvement by joining groups in the senior parade. As a result of the junior Junkanoo programme, many children have recognized their talents in music and dance and have become great musicians or professional dancers.'

The Junior Junkanoo Program was designed to bring together young people through workshops, seminars and summer programmes, to be taught the fundamentals of Junkanoo design, Music, Costuming and Dance, and to instruct and assist organizers, participants and Judges in further devaluing the art of Junkanoo in New Providence and the Family Islands; subsequently, creating an atmosphere for the social development of our youth, and to provide wholesome, positive and creative activities for students. Such a measure would ensure the survival and continual growth of Junkanoo in the Bahamas for years to come.
