When I received the phone call four months ago from Claudette Dean with the offer to work with her to produce her new Performance Art Video for
The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas NE6 Art Exhibition, a great wave of intrigue came over me because when it comes to Claudette, one never knows what new genre of creative inspiration will channel through her. We all know of her talents on canvas and her evolution to Mixed Media, but are you also aware of Claudette’s poetry writing? Similar to the ethereal quality of her paintings on canvas, so to is her poetry. However, she doesn’t stop there, her inspiration has taken her to Clay and Encaustics, spoken word and now to Performance Art. One can’t help but wonder what will come next…I will challenge her to songwriting; we may become the next mega dollar songwriting duo of the new age!

As I mentally traverse back in time, I recall first working with Claudette when she and another popular and talented Bahamian artist Chantal Bethel presented; ‘Timeline’ - Two Women, Two Journeys, One Exhibition in 2005. Seeing Claudette’s work, one can’t help but conclude that she is spiritually connected to unwritten laws that foster harmonious coexistence free from the superficial veils of delusion that mask our true selves.

This video presentation more than any other form of creative expression provides a multidimensional outcry for true freedom. During this production there were moments when deep emotions were released; this performance was true to life, it emanated from a spiritual place within.

The theme of The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas (NAGB) sixth exhibition (NE6) is “Kingdom Come.” NAGB Director Amanda Coulson describes the times we're living in as, "A time of great change,” and that “These times of crisis are actually times of rebirth as well because people rethink of what’s valuable and how to live their lives and hopefully come up with solutions to envisage the way forward. We can all sit around and talk about how bad the crime is, but what is a solution?” In that vein, the name of Claudette’s presentation is ‘Resurrection.’ She sums up her performance art presentation as follows:

“From the minute we are born, layer upon layer of labels and identities begin to conceal and separate us from one another.
Veil after veil, I removed all that I thought I was and all that I thought I had to be. Exposed and vulnerable, without labels or identities, I stood only as truth and in the silence of the heart I remembered I Am That I Am.”

We invite you to experience Claudette Dean’s ‘Resurrection’ and enjoy the behind the scenes photos taken at Claudette's art studio leading up to this magnum opus that is Claudette Dean’s. The presentation was composed and performed entirely by Claudette Dean. The video was directed by David Mackey and produced by Mackey Media Ltd.
