Nassau, Bahamas - Just two days after  Loretta Butler-Turner announced her bid to run for FNM Leader, Dr. Duane Sands has today, October 15th announced his bid to run for Deputy Leader of the Free National Movement.

Dr. Duane Sands, a cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon, was born in Nassau to Basil and Roberta Sands in 1962. During his formative years, he spent quite a bit of time with his grandmothers who resided on Freetown Lane off Kemp Road and Hay Street in Grants Town (his paternal grandfather died before he was born and his maternal grandfather died when he was four). His parents and grandparents hail from Long Island and Eleuthera.

He was educated at St. Anne’s High School in Nassau, Cheshire Academy in Connecticut and Tufts University in Massachusetts, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry.

After obtaining his Doctor of Medicine degree from Johns Hopkins University, School of Medicine in 1986, and completing his residency in General Surgery and Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at Wayne State University in Michigan in 1994, Dr. Sands returned home and began serving the Bahamian people as a consultant-physician at the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH).

Duane has served as Director of Accident and Emergency at PMH, and later as the Hospital’s Chief of Surgery. He also practices at Doctors Hospital and the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Institute of the Bahamas Ltd.

In the last 15 years, he has made it a point to give back to those less fortunate than him, mentoring several persons within the inner-city.

Ernie—as he prefers to be called and friends and family call him—is a proud member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. He worships at Christ Church Cathedral and has four wonderful children: Adrienne, Brandon, Nicholas and Mila.

In his spare time, Ernie likes to hang with his children, read, watch movies and listen to music and is particularly relaxed when he is travelling throughout the archipelago.
