Freeport, BAHAMAS – The Grand Bahama Health Services Bahamas Shock Wavers now has bragging rights as the Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival (BJC) 2015 Beach Olympics Winners, following an impressive showing at the games on Saturday, April 18th on Taino Beach.
Seven teams, including the Cable Bahamas Connection, Grand Bahama Shipyard Sharks, Grand Bahama Port Authority Regulators, Polymers International Ltd. Reactors, Grand Bahama Health Services Shock Wavers, Grand Bahama Power Company and the Ministry for Grand Bahama, participated in the Beach Olympics, toughing it out through a rigorous obstacle course, Tug O’ War, Dunk Tank, Basketball and Volley Ball competitions.
Special Olympics Grand Bahama Piccadilly Pirates also got in on some of the action.
In the end, the Shock Wavers would walk away with Best Design for the Junkanoo Bed competition and the floating trophy for the overall competition.
Jacquie Rolle, director for Beach Olympics, said Corporate Grand Bahama responded in a grand way and had a fun filled day of competition.
“Teams came out to win; they were determined to take home this beautiful trophy that was designed by Mr. Sydney Pratt. They came out there with a purpose. The level of competitiveness, the level of heart, the level of grit was phenomenal. We were so encouraged by what we had seen and what took place,” Rolle said.
“We want to commend all of those companies that responded in a huge way. This is the first time that we’ve ever had this event and we want to thank them so much for coming out and helping us to also raise funds to present to the Special Olympics committee.”
Rolle pointed out that it was very close, tight competition.
Grand Bahama Power Company captured second place and Cable Bahamas finished third.
The Grand Bahama Health Services Shock Wavers participated in every event and gained bonus points for the involvement of their Hospital Administrator Sharon Williams.
“They came prepared, they had so much fun and they were out there cheering their teammates on. They said from day one that they were going to take home this beautiful trophy. So they have bragging rights for the next year,” Rolle said.
While she wished the turnout of spectators was in greater numbers, Rolle said it was a joy to see everyone having a blast and thanked the teams for helping to make the Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival Beach Olympics 2015 a success.
Rolle also thanked Sports Teams Coordinator James Vega; Sports Team Leaders Coach Terry Wildgoose, who was responsible for Basketball; Oriel Knowles, who coordinated the Volleyball competition; Ravanno Ferguson, who coordinated the Tug O' War, Bed Race and Obstacle Course; Sports Officiants Susan Bain, Kem Stuart and Monique Archer; the student volunteers from Eight Mile Rock High School, Bishop Michael Eldon, Mary Star of The Sea Catholic School, St. Paul’s Methodist, volunteers from the general public; the Grand Bahama Darts Association and GB Distributors and Mr. Poitier for providing the equipment for the darts and pool tournaments.
Kudos also went out to Fitness Instructors Shan Whylly and Tangernika Williams, of GB Fitness (Spinning); Robert Harris and Robert Lewis, of Olympic Heights (Crossfit Training); Dekel Nesbitt, of Bowflex Barbie, and Pauline Riley, of Muscletone Fitness and Nutrition (Cardio/Aerobics) who were responsible for the fitness workouts early Saturday morning.
“This was about community. This was about coming together and having fun, but also to give back and to bring awareness to a special cause,” she said.
Officiant Kemp Stuart of the Grand Bahama Amateur Athletic Association noted that the competition was very keen while he pointed out that the Shock Wavers were victorious as a result of their CEO’s participation.
Finishing in fourth place was the Grand Bahama Shipyard Sharks; in fifth place was the Grand Bahama Port Authority Regulators; while Polymers International Ltd. Reactors came in sixth Place; the Grand Bahama Power Company II in seventh place and in eighth place was Special OlympicsGrand Bahama Piccadilly Pirates.
"Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival Beach Olympics was introduced not only to get corporate Grand Bahama involved in this historical event, but to give back to such an important cause as Special Olympics," shared Ginger Moxey, Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival Grand Bahama event organizer. “Once again, thank you corporate Grand Bahama for stepping up to the plate and embracing the inaugural events of Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival for Grand Bahama Island.”
Proceeds raised from the Beach Olympics was donated to Special Olympics Grand Bahama.
Loretta Parris, coordinator of Special Olympics Grand Bahama, was overjoyed on receiving the $2,000 check from the Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival Beach Olympics Committee. She revealed that the funds will assist in transporting the athletes who not only reside in Freeport but East and West Grand Bahama as well.
