English music icon, David Bowie has died on January 10th after an 18-month battle with cancer.  His 69th birthday was January 8th. On his last birthday he's released his latest album, "Blackstar." It shot to No. 1 on the iTunes chart in the UK and No. 2 in the United States.

David Robert Jones, known as David Bowie, was an English singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, arranger, painter and actor.

David Bowie was truly a Renaissance man and visionary artist with extraordinary talent as a singer, songwriter, performer, actor and producer, and was a musical hero to millions," said Neil Portnow President/CEO The Recording Academy in a statement today.

"A GRAMMY® Award Winner and a Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, he is remembered and celebrated today for his audacious approach to pushing creative boundaries and ability to reinvent himself time and time again, changing the course of pop music in the process. David was a true original who influenced so many and his art will live on forever. We offer our sincere condolences to his family, friends, creative collaborators and to all of David’s fans across the globe."

Lenny Kravitz left this message on Facebook, "I just woke up and I'm blown away by the news. This man changed my life. I'd have to write a book to describe what he meant to me. I would not be here without his influence on my life. The fact that I got to know him and make music with him is a blessing from God in the highest order. What he gave the world with his art is immeasurable. My deepest condolences go out to the family. Rest sweetly dear David."

And the Baha Men wrote, "Baha Men joins the world of David Bowie fans in celebrating his life as a musical forerunner. We had the pleasure of performing with Bowie in the early 90s and truly respect his artistry. He will be remembered in both our hearts and our music."
