Vancouver, BC - The 33rd annual Vancouver International Film Festival completed its 16-day run on Friday, October 10. Four audience award winners and the Women in Film + Television Artistic Merit Award recipient were announced prior to the Closing Gala screening of Damien Chazelle’s much-decorated WHIPLASH at the Centre for Performing Arts. The winners of six juried awards were announced at previous events.
Audience Awards
Rogers People’s Choice Award

All of VIFF’s feature films were eligible for the Rogers People’s Choice Award, with festival-goers casting post-screening ballots. The results of these ballots were also used to determine the winners of the following:

Jury Statement:
Sitting on the Edge of Marlene is a visual masterpiece dripping with Ana Valine's lyrical artistic voice from the very first frame. The depth of characters explored in this dark mother-daughter con-artist tale were matched only by the incredible performances from the actors. The film demands the audience to question their own definitions of tragedy and survival, hope and despair, while evoking a range of emotions, as all art should. The jury is excited to watch as Ms. Valine's body of work unfolds.
The Women in Film + Television jury included Rachelle Chartrand (screenwriter), Mary Margaret Frymire (director) and Lisa Ovies (producer/director).
