SEVEN DAY FORECAST FOR THE BAHAMAS from 16th to 22nd December 2019

General Situation: A cold front near the Central and SE Bahamas along with a surface trough near Inagua and Hispaniola continue to trigger some scattered showers or a possible thunderstorm in the area while strong high pressure ridge produces moderate to strong breezes. A cold front near the SE Bahamas will weaken and dissipate as a strong high pressure ridge shift eastwards ahead of an approaching strong cold front on late Tuesday through early Wednesday. A cold front followed by strong high pressure ridge will move rapidly across the NW and Central Bahamas with unsettled weather and near gale force winds affecting the area from early Thursday through Friday. By Saturday a surface low pressure system will develop near South Florida and tighten pressures between high pressure ridge will produce potential gale or near gale force conditions across the NW and parts of the Central Bahamas. As the low moves north-eastwards it will drag a cold front across the NW Bahamas on Sunday with unsettled weather mainly along and ahead of the front.

Monday 16th – Partly cloudy, breezy and very warm with the chance of a few scattered showers early in the SE Bahamas during the daytime. Partly cloudy to fair skies and mild at night with the slight chance of a passing shower. Maximum temperature 83°F and a minimum temperature 71°F. Small craft should continue to exercise caution in the NW Bahamas and advisory for the Central and SE Bahamas. Winds E’ly at 15 to 20 knots with higher gusts in the NW Bahamas and E’ly at 15 to 25 knots in the Central and SE Bahamas but higher in gusts. Seas 4 to 7 feet in the NW Bahamas, but higher in gusts and 5 to 8 feet over the Central and SE Bahamas with light to moderate N’ly and E’ly ocean swells overall exposed Atlantic waters.

Tuesday 17th – Partly to mostly sunny, very breezy and quite warm with few passing showers during the daytime. Fair to clear skies and breezy at night with the slight chance of a shower. Maximum temperature 84°F and a minimum temperature 72°F. Small craft should exercise caution in the NW and Central Bahamas early and an advisory for the SE Bahamas, falling a caution later. Winds E to SE at 15 to 20 knots early in the NW and Central Bahamas, but gusty at times and E to SE at 15 to 25 knots in the SE Bahamas early, decreasing to 15 to 20 knots later. Seas 4 to 7 in the NW Bahamas, falling to 2 to 4 feet later; 4 to 7 feet in the Central Bahamas and 5 to 8 feet in the SE Bahamas early, falling to 4 to 7 feet later. Light to moderate N’ly and E’ly ocean swells overall exposed Atlantic waters continues.

Wednesday 18th – Partly cloudy to cloudy, humid and warm with few scattered showers or possible isolated thunderstorms across the NW Bahamas but partly to mostly sunny and warm with the chance of passing showers during the daytime. Partly cloudy to cloudy with scattered showers at night over most areas. Maximum temperature 86°F and minimum temperature 72°F. Small craft should exercise caution in the SE Bahamas early and advisory comes into effect across the NW Bahamas late. Winds SSE to SSW at 10 to 15 knots in the NW Bahamas, becoming N to NE at 15 to 25 knots late; SE’ly at 10 to 15 knots in the Central Bahamas, falling light and variable at times and SE’ly at 15 to 20 knots in the SE Bahamas early, falling light and variable at times. Seas 2 to 4 feet in the NW Bahamas early, but building to 5 to 8 feet late; 2 to 4 feet in the Central Bahamas, falling to 1 to 3 feet at times and 4 to 6 feet over the ocean in the SE Bahamas early but falling to 1 to 3 feet later. Diminishing light to moderate N’ly to E’ly ocean swells overall exposed Atlantic waters continues.

Thursday 19th – Partly to mostly cloudy, windy and warm with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms mainly across the NW and Central Bahamas during the daytime, but mostly sunny and very warm across the SE Bahamas. Cloudy to overcast with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms mainly across parts of the NW and Central Bahamas but partly cloudy to fair and warm conditions across the SE Bahamas. Maximum temperature 80°F and minimum temperature 62°F. Small craft advisory in effect for the NW and Central Bahamas and an advisory for SE Bahamas for ocean swells. Winds NE’ly at 20 to 25 knots in the NW Bahamas; N to NE at 10 to 15 knots in the Central Bahamas early, increasing to 15 to 25 knots by late and light and variable at 10 knots or less in the SE Bahamas at first, switching NE to E at 10 knots or less later. Seas 6 to 9 feet in the NW Bahamas; 2 to 4 feet in the Central Bahamas building to 5 to 8 feet later and 1 to 3 feet in the SE Bahamas up to 12 feet in building moderate to large NE’ly to E’ly ocean swell overall areas.

Friday 20th – Mostly cloudy to overcast, windy and warm with some scattered showers or possible isolated thunderstorms across the Central Bahamas during the daytime through nightfall. Maximum temperature 83°F and minimum temperature 66°F. Small craft should remain in port in the NW and Central Bahamas and caution will come into effect in the SE Bahamas later. Winds NE to E at 20 to 25 knots gusting to near 30 knots on the NW and Central Bahamas and E to SE at 10 to 15 knots early in the SE Bahamas, becoming E’ly at 15 to 20 knots later. Seas 6 to 9 feet but up to 12 feet in gusts and large N’ly to NE’ly swells in the NW and Central Bahamas and 2 to 4 feet in the SE Bahamas building to 4 to 6 feet up to 7 feet in light to moderate N’ly to NE’ly swells ocean swells.

 

Saturday 21st – Partly cloudy to cloudy, windy and warm with scattered showers and few widely scattered thunderstorms during the daytime through nightfall. Maximum temperature 80°F and minimum temperature 68°F. Small craft should continue to remain in port across the NW Bahamas and advisory across the Central and SE Bahamas. Winds E’ly at 20 to 25 knots in the NW Bahamas, switching S to SW to W to NW at 15 to 25 knots with gusts to 35 knots late and E to SE at 15 to 20 knots switching SE to S at 15 to 20 knots in the SE Bahamas. Seas 6 to 9 feet in the NW Bahamas early, building up to 14 feet in gusts and N’ly to E’ly swells and 4 to 6 feet in the Central and SE Bahamas up to 9 feet in large N’ly to NE’ly ocean swell overall areas.

Sunday 22nd – Mostly cloudy to overcast mainly across the NW and Central Bahamas switching the Central and SE Bahamas with scattered showers and widely scattered thunderstorms through nightfall. Maximum temperature 75°F and minimum temperature 64°F. Small craft remains in port overall areas due near gale-force winds and large ocean swells. Winds W’ly at 15 to 25 knots early, becoming WSW to WNW at 30 to 40 knots in the NW and Central Bahamas late and SW to W at 10 to 15 knots in the SE Bahamas, becoming W’ly at 15 to 25 knots with gusts to 30 knots later. Seas 5 to 8 feet early, building to 15 to 18 feet late in the NW and Central Bahamas in NW’ly to N’ly swells and 2 to 4 feet in the SE Bahamas building up to 13 feet later.

Beachgoers and mariners should be vigilant for rough surf and the moderate to high risk of dangerous rip currents mainly along the north and east coast beaches during the stated advisories. Boaters and beachgoers should also be alert for possible waterspout activity. Mariners should exercise caution for gusty winds and higher seas during heavy showers or possible thunderstorms. Moderate to large ocean swells will continue to affect the seas on north through east coast beaches, with occasional sea spray and road incursion from sand and battering waves likely along coastal roads.
