ALERT #5 ON POTENTIAL TROPICAL CYCLONE NINE ISSUED BY THE BAHAMAS DEPARTMENT OF METEOROLOGY, WEDNESDAY 29TH JULY 2020, AT 9 AM EDT.

…HEAVY RAINFALL AND GUSTY WINDS ARE SPREADING OVER THE LEEWARD ISLANDS…

A TROPICAL STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE ISLANDS OF THE SOUTHEAST BAHAMAS.  THIS INCLUDES THE ISLANDS OF INAGUA, MAYAGUANA, CROOKED ISLAND, ACKLINS, RAGGED ISLAND, LONG CAY, AND SAMANA CAY.

A TROPICAL STORM WATCH ALSO REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE TURKS & CAICOS ISLANDS.

A TROPICAL STORM WATCH MEANS THAT TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS COULD BE EXPERIENCED WITHIN 48 HOURS.

A TROPICAL STORM ALERT IS NOW IN EFFECT FOR THE ISLANDS OF THE CENTRAL BAHAMAS. THIS INCLUDES THE ISLANDS OF LONG ISLAND, CAT ISLAND, EXUMA, RUM CAY, SAN SALVADOR, SOUTH ELEUTHERA AND SOUTH ANDROS.

 

A TROPICAL STORM ALERT MEANS THAT TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS COULD AFFECT THE MENTIONED ISLANDS WITHIN 60 HOURS.

AT 8 AM EDT, THE CENTER OF POTENTIAL TROPICAL CYCLONE NINE WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 15.1 DEGREES NORTH AND LONGITUDE 62.1 DEGREES WEST, OR ABOUT 55 MILES WEST-SOUTHWEST OF DOMINICA, OR ABOUT 560 SOUTHEAST OF SAN JUAN PUERTO RICO, OR ABOUT 785 MILES SOUTHEAST OF GRAND TURK, OR ABOUT 840 MILES SOUTHEAST OF INAGUA, OR ABOUT 1210 MILES SOUTHEAST OF NEW PROVIDENCE.

THE DISTURBANCE IS MOVING TOWARD THE WEST-NORTHWEST NEAR 23 MPH AND THIS GENERAL MOTION WITH SOME SLIGHT REDUCTION IN FORWARD SPEED IS EXPECTED OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS.  ON THIS FORECAST TRACK, THE DISTURBANCE WILL MOVE OVER THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS BY THURSDAY EVENING AND OVER THE SOUTHEAST BAHAMAS ON FRIDAY.

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 45 MPH WITH HIGHER GUSTS.  SOME INCREASE IN STRENGTH IS FORECAST TODAY, WITH WEAKENING LIKELY ON THURSDAY DUE TO LAND INTERACTION, AND SOME RESTRENGTHENING POSSIBLE ON FRIDAY. 

LOCALIZED FLOODING AND GUSTY WINDS ARE EXPECTED IN THE AFOREMENTIONED ISLANDS AS THE SYSTEM APPROACHES.  RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 4 TO 8 INCHES CAN BE EXPECTED OVER THE SOUTHEAST BAHAMAS AND 3 TO 6 INCHES OVER THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS.

SWELLS GENERATED BY POTENTIAL TROPICAL CYCLONE NINE ARE FORECAST TO AFFECT THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS AND THE SOUTHEAST BAHAMAS ON THURSDAY.  BOATERS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD REMAIN IN PORT.

RESIDENTS IN THE TURKS & CAICOS ISLANDS AND THE SOUTHEAST BAHAMAS SHOULD BEGIN TO COMPLETE ALL PREPARATIONS TO MITIGATE DAMAGES DUE TO FLOODING AND SECURE ALL LOOSE ITEMS AROUND THEIR PROPERTY.  RESIDENTS IN THE REMAINDER OF THE BAHAMAS SHOULD PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO ALL FURTHER ALERTS ON THIS SYSTEM.
 
THE NEXT ALERT ON POTENTIAL TROPICAL CYCLONE NINE WILL BE ISSUED AT NOON EDT.
