ALERT #8 ON POTENTIAL TROPICAL CYCLONE NINE ISSUED BY THE BAHAMAS DEPARTMENT OF METEOROLOGY, WEDNESDAY 29TH JULY 2020, AT 6 PM EDT.

.…HEAVY RAINFALL AND GUSTY WINDS CONTINUE TO SPREAD ACROSS THE LEEWARD ISLANDS…THE U.S. AND BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS…AND PUERTO RICO….

A TROPICAL STORM WARNING IS NOW IN EFFECT FOR THE SOUTHEAST BAHAMAS. THIS INCLUDES THE ISLANDS OF INAGUA, MAYAGUANA, CROOKED ISLAND, ACKLINS, RAGGED ISLAND, LONG CAY, SAMANA CAY AND THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS.

A TROPICAL STORM WATCH IS NOW IN EFFECT FOR THE CENTRAL BAHAMAS. THIS INCLUDES THE ISLANDS OF EXUMA, CAT ISLAND, RUM CAY, SAN SALVADOR, LONG ISLAND AND SOUTH ANDROS.

A TROPICAL STORM ALERT IS NOW IN EFFECT FOR PORTIONS OF THE NORTHWST BAHAMAS. THIS INCLUDES THE ISLANDS OF BIMINI, NORTH AND CENTRAL ANDROS.

A TROPICAL STORM WARNING MEANS THAT TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS COULD BE EXPERIENCED WITHIN 36 HOURS.

A TROPICAL STORM WATCH MEANS THAT TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS COULD BE EXPERIENCED WITHIN 48 HOURS.

A TROPICAL STORM ALERT MEANS THAT TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS
COULD AFFECT THE MENTIONED ISLANDS WITHIN 60 HOURS.

AT 5 PM EDT, THE CENTER OF POTENTIAL TROPICAL CYCLONE NINE WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 16.4 DEGREES NORTH AND LONGITUDE 65.6 DEGREES WEST, OR ABOUT  320 MILES EAST-SOUTHEAST OF SANTO DOMINGO, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, OR ABOUT  505 MILES SOUTHEAST OF GRAND TURK, OR ABOUT  585 MILES EAST-SOUTHEAST OF INAGUA, OR ABOUT  962 MILES SOUTHEAST OF NEW PROVIDENCE.
THE DISTURBANCE IS MOVING TOWARD THE WEST-NORTHWEST NEAR 23 MPH AND THIS GENERAL MOTION WITH A REDUCTION IN FORWARD SPEED IS EXPECTED OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS. ON THE FORECAST TRACK, THE SYSTEM WILL MOVE OVER THE SOUTHEAST BAHAMAS AND THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS ON

FRIDAY AND APPROACH THE NORTHWEST BAHAMAS FRIDAY NIGHT.
MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 45 MPH WITH HIGHER GUSTS. SOME INCREASE IN STRENGTH IS FORECAST THROUGH TONIGHT, WITH WEAKENING LIKELY ON THURSDAY DUE TO LAND INTERACTION. SOME RESTRENGTHENING IS POSSIBLE BY THIS WEEKEND.

LOCALIZED FLOODING AND GUSTY WINDS ARE EXPECTED IN THE AFOREMENTIONED ISLANDS AS THE SYSTEM APPROACHES. RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 4 TO 8 INCHES CAN BE EXPECTED OVER THE SOUTHEAST BAHAMAS AND 3 TO 6 INCHES OVER THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS.

RESIDENTS IN THE TURKS & CAICOS ISLANDS AND THE SOUTHEAST BAHAMAS SHOULD RUSH TO COMPLETE ALL PREPARATIONS TO MITIGATE DAMAGES DUE TO FLOODING AND SECURE ALL LOOSE ITEMS AROUND THEIR PROPERTY.
RESIDENTS IN THE REMAINDER OF THE BAHAMAS SHOULD PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO ALL FURTHER ALERTS ON THIS SYSTEM.

THE NEXT ALERT ON POTENTIAL TROPICAL CYCLONE NINE WILL BE ISSUED AT 9 PM EDT.
