SPECIAL MARINE WEATHER WATCH

THE BAHAMAS DEPARTMENT OF METEOROLOGY HAS ISSUED A SPECIAL MARINE WEATHER WATCH FOR 24 HOURS FROM 4:00 PM EDT WEDNESDAY 13TH NOVEMBER 2019 UNTIL 4:00 PM THURSDAY 14TH NOVEMBER 2019.

DANGEROUS OCEAN SWELLS GENERATED FROM A DEEP LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM SPINNING IN THE WESTERN ATLANTIC OCEAN WILL AFFECT THE BAHAMAS STARTING THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH THURSDAY AFTERNOON. MARINERS, ESPECIALLY SMALL CRAFT BOATERS SHOULD BE EXTRA VIGILANT AND STAY NEAR OR IN PORT WHEN CONDITIONS WORSENS.

THESE LARGE OCEAN SWELLS WILL LIKELY CAUSE FLOODING AND DEBRIS ALONG COASTAL ROADS. RESIDENTS WHO TRAVERSE THESE AREAS SHOULD EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION AND AVOID CROSSING AREAS SUCH AS THE FISHING HOLE ROAD IN GRAND BAHAMA, AND THE GLASS WINDOW BRIDGE IN ELEUTHERA AS CONDITIONS WORSENS.

STRONG WINDS WITH HIGHER GUSTS WILL AFFECT THE EXTREME NORTHWEST BAHAMAS WHICH INCLUDES GRAND BAHAMA, ABACO AND BIMINI DURING THE SAME PERIOD. SMALL CRAFT BOATERS IN THE EXTREME NORTHWEST BAHAMAS ARE STRONGLY URGED TO REMAIN IN PORT.

ALTHOUGH THE WINDS WILL ONLY LAST FOR 24 HOURS THE OCEAN SWELLS WILL PERSIST ACROSS THE BAHAMAS THROUGH NEXT WEEK. THE MET OFFICE URGES ALL SMALL CRAFT BOATERS AND BEACHGOERS TO CONTINUE TO BE VIGILANT AND REMAIN NEAR OR ONSHORE UNTIL THE THREAT HAS PASSED.
