Costa Rica signed, at the headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS), the Inter-American Convention against All Forms of Discrimination and Intolerance. The Central American country joins Argentina, Chile, Ecuador and Uruguay, as the fifth nation in the Americas to have signed all conventions related to human rights

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica, Manuel Ventura Robles, said that with the signing of this Convention Costa Rica fulfills "a debt we had with the Inter-American Human Rights System and we wanted to comply with it as soon as possible." Minister Ventura also expressed his hope that the Legislative Power of his country will soon ratify the signing of this Convention.

OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro said that it is essential to have coordinated efforts in the hemisphere aimed at combating discrimination and intolerance in all its forms. "We celebrate the signing of Costa Rica, which shows the country’s commitment to guarantee the respect of international regulations, a gesture that strengthens a diverse and equitable hemisphere," he said.

To date, the Convention has been signed by eleven States - Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Haiti, Mexico, Panama, Peru, and Costa Rica . The negotiation of the Convention took 13 years within the Permanent Council of the OAS.
