The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Ecuador is attentive and present, observing the various aspects of the post-electoral process and that the different actors have the guarantees necessary at this stage.
Since Sunday evening the Mission has continuously observed the vote counting in the provincial boards of Guayas, Los Ríos, Manabí, El Oro y Pichincha. Currently a team of observers is present in the two shifts in which the public vote counting is carried out in Guayaquil, and another is observing the tallying of votes from outside the country. At all times, the eyes of the OAS have accompanied and will continue to accompany this process until its conclusion.
Moreover, the members of the Mission have observed the presence of representatives of the three political forces with the possibility of advancing to the second round, and that the members of the provincial boards have been open to answering the concerns of the parties.
At this time, the gap between the second and third place candidates is very narrow. Therefore, it is fundamental that the contending tickets have certainty that their votes are being taken care of by the electoral authorities. It is important that all parties behave responsibly and resolve their differences institutionally, through the mechanisms established in the legislation of Ecuador.
The transparent handling of this process will provide reassurance to the participants that their rights are being respected and to the public that their decisions will be duly reflected in the results.
The OAS remains open to listen to political actors and in constant communication with the electoral authority.
