The Permanent Representative of El Salvador to the Organization of American States (OAS), Carlos Alberto Calles, today assumed the Chair of the Permanent Council -which rotates every three months- analyzing the challenges that the region still faces and that must be addressed in the debates of the political entity.

"I assume this responsibility under a mandate characterized by the philosophy of my government, which is to make broad policies to strengthen development and cooperation. I commit to have a chairmanship based on the experience of my predecessors, with the help of the General Secretariat, to make the Permanent Council the political entity that should be," said the Salvadoran representative.

For his part, the outgoing Chair and Permanent Representative of Ecuador, Carlos Alberto Játiva, summarized the main achievements of his tenure and the issues that occupied it, highlighting those of human rights, the crises in Venezuela and Nicaragua, the situation of migrants and the debates held during the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Organization.

"The issues on the OAS agenda impact the international community as a whole, as they did last quarter, because they deal with the fate of multilateralism, democratic governance, the need to eradicate poverty, and to advance in the full enjoyment of human rights," said Ambassador Játiva.

The Vice Chair of the Council will be held by the Representative of Colombia, Alejandro Ordóñez.
