The
Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José
Miguel Insulza, today received the Minister of Financial Services of The Bahamas,
Ryan Pinder, with whom he discussed issues related to economic
cooperation and financial development and possible areas in which the
OAS can support the Caribbean country.
The meeting, held at the
office of Secretary General Insulza in Washington, DC, covered topics
such as the bilateral economic agenda of The Bahamas with countries like
Brazil, Mexico, the United States and Panama, as well as the future of
economic agreements in the region. In this regard, Secretary General
Insulza and Minister Pinder discussed the possibility that the
initiatives of the Ministry of Finance of The Bahamas could receive the
support of the OAS through its Foreign Trade Information System, which
centralizes information on trade policy in the Americas.
The two
officials also agreed on the importance of working together to combat
money laundering derived from drug trafficking, and analyzing the impact
of this scourge in the countries of the region. Other topics of
conversation included the promotion of investment and the importance and
benefits of tourism, especially for The Bahamas.
