The 23rd Inter-American Congress of Ministers and High-Level Authorities of Tourism, coordinated by the Organization of American States (OAS), will be held in Lima on September 3 and 4, according to an agreement signed today by the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, and the Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism of Peru, Magali Silva.

After signing the agreement, the Secretary General Almagro said "the aspect of community tourism and the historical depth that this perspective has in Peru will allow other states to learn about this experience and enrich it with their own perspectives." "Tourism is not a selfish task, but one that requires cooperation and collaboration between States. The more agencies of Inter-American coordination we have, the better for our societies and our economies," he added.

For her part, Minister Silva said that "for us it is of the utmost importance to develop rural community tourism because it allows us to connect to the living culture of the treasures we have in Peru and in all the countries of Latin America, to preserve ancestral traditions and share them with tourists who are looking for a different experience.” The next edition of the conference, the minister said, will allow for the exchange of experiences and discussion of public policies to create more jobs and bring sustainability to communities that have not yet been connected to markets.

The Inter-American Congress of Ministers and High-Level Authorities of Tourism, to which are invited the ministers of the member states of the Organization was established in 1939, even before the OAS itself, and is the principal hemispheric forum for policy dialogue to promote sustainable development tourism in the Americas, by conducting meetings to address technical issues and promote Inter-American cooperation in this field.
