The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Community of Democracies (CoD) signed today a Memorandum of Understanding that establishes a concrete framework of collaboration for carrying out joint initiatives for the promotion and strengthening of democracy. The agreement seeks to contribute to the discussion on the role of global and regional organizations in advancing democratic sustainability, as well as the key elements that are recognized as instrumental for building inclusive and sustainable democracies.
At the signing of the agreement, OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro highlighted the many values shared by both institutions and affirmed that “today’s challenges are many: from the rise of populism, to economic difficulties and regional disputes, it is only through dialogue, inclusive policies based on democratic values which will ensure the continuity of prosperity and freedom for all nations; therefore, the OAS is pleased to partner with the Community of Democracies in the promotion of these fundamental values for the promotion and strengthening of democracy.”
The Secretary General of the Community of Democracies, Thomas E. Garrett, recalled that the OAS and the CoD share nine member countries (Argentina, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, United States and Uruguay) and affirmed that “this agreement is an important step towards enhancing our joint efforts to promote and strengthen democratic values and institutions at the regional and global level. I look forward to continuing our cooperation with the OAS to support our shared democratic values.’’
Intergovernmental organizations such as the CoD and the OAS serve as platforms to exchange best practices, provide assistance and encourage member states to strengthen their commitment to international and regional principles and standards stated in their respective democratic instruments: The Inter-American Democratic Charter in the case of the OAS and the Warsaw Declaration for the CoD members.
