The Organization of American States (OAS) and the International Cooperative Alliance today signed a cooperation agreement that will identify common projects of specific cooperation so that both institutions can support member states in their efforts to promote and facilitate the cooperative model, with the ultimate goal of promoting greater inclusion and development in the region.
At the signing ceremony, Secretary General Luis Almagro affirmed that "cooperativism builds trust through the relations of acts of association, and in doing so strengthens the social and political fabric, strengthening democracy and development." He also stressed that the signing of the agreement “demonstrates the need to join forces and strengthen the impact of our practices, showing countries that we have a responsibility and that we are willing to increase dialogue, further improve our articulation and bring them closer to the best possible initiatives.”
For her part, the President of Cooperatives of the Americas, Graciela Fernández, said that the agreement “is a key part of our central project, which is inclusion and sustainable development. We believe that cooperativism is the tool for social inclusion and economic development and it is our deep desire to develop, along with the OAS, projects for the development of social economy where associativism is the central tool.”
The International Cooperative Alliance represents and serves more than 310 cooperative organizations in 109 countries representing more than 1 billion people worldwide.
