ViaSat and the OAS join efforts to reduce the digital divide in the Americas

The satellite services company ViaSat officially joined today the 2030 ICT Alliance, an initiative led by the Inter-American Telecommunications Commission (CITEL) of the Organization of American States. This alliance seeks to connect 1.5 billion people globally by 2020, connect all public schools to the internet to by 2030, promote digital training, develop talents for the digital economy, and strengthen democratic participation through new technologies.

During the signing of the agreement, the Vice President and General Manager of ViaSat Inc, Prakash Chitre, highlighted the company´s work in operating community Wi-Fi services “in thousands of previously unattended communities, extending the internet to millions of people and allowing them to take advantage of the benefits of digital transformation.” “With this accession, it is expected to benefit more people in rural or underserved areas in Latin America and the Caribbean to close the digital divide in the countries of the region,” he said.

In welcoming ViaSat to the ICT Alliance 2030, the OAS Secretary General, Luis Almagro, said “we trust that under its vision, we will be able to reduce the digital divide in the Americas,” and added that “one of the most important characteristics about this adherence is the perspective of sustainability that ViaSat has given to its projects, focused not only on connecting, but also on creating plans that allow the strengthening and appropriation of information technologies by communities in remote areas.
