This Easter Monday, March 28th, 2016, all
roads will lead to East Grand Bahama for the 18th Annual Pelican
Point Coconut Festival.
The signature holiday event will feature a grand
showcase of authentic Bahamian crafts, entertainment and typical Grand Bahamian
eats and drinks, as everything coconut is celebrated.
Coconut Festival is held annually on Easter Monday, when
family, friends, and guests descend upon the small seaside village to a feast
of coconut dishes such as coconut jimmy, coconut shrimp, barbecue ribs with
coconut sauce, coconut rice, coconut tart, and more, as well as a variety of
coconut beverages including our famous ‘Gully Wash’ – a uniquely Bahamian drink
made with coconut water.
Participants will have the opportunity to compete in
the coconut eating and coconut barking contests; coconut leaf plaiting and tart
eating contests, as well as enjoy shopping for indigenous coconut jewelry and
so much more!
Much like any signature Bahamian cultural event, the
day would not be complete without a cultural showcase from the Grand Bahama
District of the Royal Bahamas Police Force Pop Band, with a featured
performance by D-Mac!
About Pelican Point
Home of the Coconut Festival, the Pelican Point community is comprised
of fewer than one hundred residents. It is situated approximately 40 miles east
of Freeport town centre and, to this day, remains populated by descendants of
the original settlers of this seaside village. The organizing committee, headed
by members of the Thomas, Laing, Roberts and Cooper families, in partnership
with the Ministry of Tourism and corporate sponsors, is dedicated to keeping
the village’s down home traditions alive. This community is also the proud
holder of the Ministry of Tourism’s coveted “Best Kept Community” award, the
evidence of which can still be seen in the community’s clean and pristine
environment. The ‘Best Kept Community’ award program is part of the general
Community Tourism Program facilitated by the Ministry of Tourism. Community
Tourism is all about educating the residents about the Tourism industry and
empowering them to be benefactors of the Tourism business.
