Fort Lauderdale, Florida - The works of three artists representing The Islands Of The Bahamas, will be featured at the Harlem Fine Arts Show which takes place in New York, at the historic Riverside Church, February 4-7th, 2016.

The Harlem Fine Arts Show is an exhibition of contemporary paintings, sculpture and photography featuring art from the African Diaspora. The 4-day New York Show will showcase over 80 national and international artists and galleries and will be open to collectors, art enthusiasts, educators and professionals...

As one of the show sponsors, The Bahamas will have three of its artists exhibiting at the show said to be a “celebration of that artistic history that also exposes visitors to modern day African American masters.” The Bahamian contingent of artists will include Eddie Minnis, Jamaal Rolle and Chantal Bethel. Director of Culture and Heritage for The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, Mrs. Arlene Nash-Ferguson will be in attendance at the show.

Bahamian artist Eddie Minnis after receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in architecture from McGill University, Montreal Canada, decided to pursue a career in art instead. He has worked in a number of mediums including ink, watercolors and pastels; however, he now specializes in oil painting with the palette knife. He is renowned for his landscapes and paintings of The Bahamas’ architectural heritage. He has also painted many scenes of Harbor Island, seascapes and landscapes of The Bahamas. His paintings are in private collections internationally including the U.S. Canada, Britain, Australia and Korea.

Bahamian born and educated, Jamaal Rolle is known as The Celebrity artist and it is said that he has the world’s largest celebrity portfolio. His life-like portrait depictions of world figures, government officials, billionaires and A-list celebrities, include U.S. President, Barack Obama, Sir Sidney Poitier, Johnny Depp and his Holiness Pope Francis. Recognition of Rolle’s work includes winning a People’s Choice “Artist of the Year Award” in 2012.

Born in Haiti, Chantal Bethel has made Grand Bahama Island, Bahamas, her home since 1971. The artist began her career in art in her adult life, after a long career in medical management. She worked under master artists in Belgium, the U.S. and Canada, where she studied at the Haliburton School of the Arts. Since 2005, she has pushed her painting practice into sculptural territory with her “Royal Collection,” a series of figures carved out of the Royal Palm tree, and her use of crackle medium – for which she has become known – bringing sculptural surface to her paintings. She has exhibited and participated in exhibitions internationally. Her works are in corporate and private collections in Belgium, Finland, the U.S., Canada and The Bahamas.

Mrs. Arlene Nash-Ferguson, The Director of Culture and History for The Bahamas said, “It is an honour and privilege for The Islands of The Bahamas to partner with the Harlem Fine Arts Show 2016. This is another wonderful demonstration of the strong bond between The Bahamas and the African-American community, which has deep historical roots, and has existed for centuries.”

The Director of Culture and Heritage also said “The Bahamas is blessed with a rich cultural heritage, and we are delighted for this opportunity to showcase three of our outstanding artists at the Harlem Fine Arts Show. The work of our Bahamian artists should give way to a conversation on the depth of the spirit of the Bahamian people that has transcended our beginnings as people of colour in the western world. We are especially looking forward with anticipation to hosting the Harlem Fine Arts show in our country in November.”

In addition to New York and The Bahamas, HFAS
( www.hfas.org ) will also take place in Atlanta, Chicago, Martha’s Vineyard and Washington.
