In line with the 2013 United Nations International Year of Water Cooperation, the 2013 theme for World Tourism Day is; Tourism & Water, Protecting our Common Future. As the most widely celebrated global day for tourism, it represents a unique opportunity to raise awareness of tourism’s role in water access and shine a spotlight on the sector’s contribution to a more sustainable water future.

In recognition of this, The Bahamas’ Ministry of Tourism’s Sustainable Tourism Unit in partnership with the Water and Sewerage Corporation, Caribbean Water and Wastewater Association, and the Bahamas Home and Builders Show, will be holding a Photo Competition with an aim to reflect how this precious resource can be conserved. The competition is open amateur photographers of all ages. There will be two categories, Youth (18 years and under) and; Adults (older than 18). Individuals are limited to one (1) entry each and must be submitted to wtdphotocompetition@gmail.com by Sunday, September 22nd, 2013 along with the entry form.

"Water is one of tourism’s main assets", remarked UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai. He went on to say, "As one of the largest economic sectors in the world, it is the responsibility of the tourism sector to take a leadership role and ensure companies and destinations invest in adequate water management throughout the value chain."

In his official statement, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged tourism establishments to cut consumption and improve waste management. He also called on individuals to play their part, by making environmentally conscious choices when they travel.

World Tourism Day (WTD) is held annually on September 27th. Its purpose is to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value. The event seeks to address global challenges outlined in the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s) and to highlight the contribution that the Tourism sector can make in reaching these goals.
