Nassau, Bahamas - Winston Rolle, president, Bahamas Chamber of Commerce (L) toured the new container port at Arawak Cay to update his organization on the progress of the developments there. He said he enjoyed the tour, and expressed pleasure at the progress was brought up to date on what has been going on in the shipping sector these past three years and Mike informed him about the tariff charges.

Leading the tour was Mike Maura, CEO, Arawak Port Development (APD), developers, owners and operators of the facility in which 11,000 Bahamians recently acquired shares. Mr Maura briefed the Chamber president on the state-of-the-art complex, which facilitates general cargo, bulk and break-bulk operations.

Special features of the new port include a 26-foot draft at Arawak Cay offering shippers lower vessel cost per teu and direct calls by global feeder vessels, three container vessel berths of over 1,168 ft, 2,468 feet of bulkhead, 1,768 feet of apron and 1,168 feet of crane rail. Mr Rolle also viewed 25,000 where the shippers’ offices are housed, the nearly completed main gate and security checkpoint and the recently landed giant Liebherr 320 crane, which can handle 30 containers per hour, tripling the ports container processing efficiency. Transported from Spain on a Jumbo ship, the crane cost $2 million landed. The Arawak container port is further enhanced by the dedicated deconsolidation and LCL facilities at Gladstone Freight Terminal.

Developed at the cost of some $70 million, the Arawak Cay container port has recently been the subject of the most successful public offering in The Bahamas to date, adding 11,000 Bahamians to the partnership between government and private-sector shipping interests.
