187 Public Hospitals Authority employees honoured at PHA Awards

187 employees of the Public Hospitals Authority were honoured at a gala ball on Saturday 19th, July, 2014 at the Melia Resort on Cable Beach. The employees who have given thirty, thirty-five, forty and forty-five years of service were presented with awards for long service to the people of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas. Noted recipients of long service awards included Dr. Percival McNeil, Consultant Paediatrician, Dr. Patrick Whitfield, Consultant Internal Medicine, Dr. Glen Beneby, Medical Advisor for the PHA and Dr. Paul Ward, Consultant and Medical Chief of Staff, Grand Bahama Health Services.

A high point of the evening was the Annual Awards Ceremony for Clinical Excellence and Performance Excellence. Mr. Branville Rolle, Stores Assistant in the Materials Management Directorate was crowned the PHA’s Employee of the Year, and Nursing Officer I Carimenda Ferguson of the Princess Margaret Hospital was recognized as PHA’s Leader of the Year. Dr. Margo Munroe, Registrar at Princess Margaret Hospital was recognized as the Physician of the Year in the Clinical Awards Category for Medicine, EMT and Paramedic Mr. Kevin Bell won the Clinical Excellence Award for Allied Health, and Staff Nurse Deborah Deleveaux from the Princess Margaret Hospital received the Clinical Excellence Award for Nursing. The Burns Unit Princess Margaret Hospital earned the Department of the Year award and Grand Bahama Health Services (which comprises the Rand Memorial Hospital and 10 community clinics) was recognized as the Institution of the Year for the second year running.

Additionally, Grand Bahama Health Services’ Ms. Sherry Scavella, Senior Medical Records Officer was awarded 3rd Runner Up in the Leader of the Year category and Ms. Latisha Lloyd, Senior Trained Clinical Nurse received 2nd Runner Up in the Clinical Excellence Award for Nursing.

The evening’s keynote address was delivered by Prime Minister the Rt. Honourable Perry Christie who stressed the historic commitment The Bahamas has displayed toward quality public healthcare. The Prime Minister went on to confirm his Government’s commitment to the delivery of universal healthcare coverage for Bahamians. Minister of Health, Dr. the Honourable Perry Gomez also addressed the Awards Event highlighting the strategic importance of the PHA and underscoring several noteworthy accomplishments of the Authority including the partnership with the Chinese Government for project Bright Journey which provided free cataract surgeries to Bahamians, the 2nd phase of improvements and expansion at the Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre property and the expansion of services at the Community Counselling and Assessment Centre at Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre, the ongoing programme of training first responders in the Family Islands and the renovation of community clinics in Grand Bahama as well as the appointment of Dr. Tiadra Dorsett-Johnson asDirector of Community Health Services for the Grand Bahama Health Servicesand Dr. Michelle Sweeting who was appointed Director of Accident & Emergency Services.

Governor General, Her Excellency Dame Marguerite Pindling was in attendance and warmly congratulated the employees honoured during the evening’s celebration. The Governor General presented awards assisted by Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Perry Christie and Minister of Health Dr. Hon. Perry Gomez as well as the Chairman of PHA Board, Sen. The Hon. Frank Smith and Managing Director of the PHA, Mr. Herbert Brown.

The Public Hospitals Authority has made the professional development of employees a strategic priority for the organization and the annual employee recognition awards is a highlight of the PHA’s calendar.
