Nassau, BAHAMAS - The College of The Bahamas Oakes Field campus was abuzz as students new to The College attended new student orientation for the Spring 2016 semester. The number of students accepted to the Oakes Field campus in Nassau and the Northern Bahamas Campus in Grand Bahama was in total 368 students.

President of The College of The Bahamas Dr. Rodney D. Smith welcomed the new students to The College.

“You have to understand that you are among the best in the entire world, all of you in here. That is a fact. There is no mistake, I think that God put all of us on this little small piece of the world and called it The Bahamas. There is no mistake that you are sitting in this room today. There is no mistake that you are hearing me remind you that you are among the best in the world,” said Dr. Smith.

Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Eslyn Jones gave the freshmen some essential advice in order for them to be successful in their tertiary education. She stressed the importance of time-management.

“Time is a critical element in your success at anything you will do. Time to turn in your assignments, time to go to the library, time to put into studying for your exams. Time is critical. We cannot wait until the last minute to do an assignment that will be a ‘D’ or a ‘C’ grade. But if you start your assignments the minute you get them and you do them incrementally you are looking for an ‘A’ grade, and you would get a 4.0. I want to encourage you to work extremely hard because The Bahamas needs you,” said Dr. Jones.

President of The College of The Bahamas Union of Students (COBUS) Mr. Keyron Smith told the students that anything is possible once they put their mind to it.

New students of The College of The Bahamas listen attentively during the new student orientation for Spring 2016.

“I want to leave you with a quote [from] Frederick Douglass, you really would need this throughout your college life, ‘Without struggle, there is no progress.’ The time that you have in this college there will be nights that it won’t be easy. There will be times when you will feel like giving up, but once you remember that quote ‘Without struggle, there is no progress’ you‘ll understand the true meaning of what it is to be [at] this institution,” said Mr. Smith.

The new students to The College are filled with expectations and possibilities as they journey on this new phase of their lives.

Mr. Anthony Hall Jr., a Law and Criminal Justice major, alluded to the fact that it takes a lot of commitment to be in College.

“You have to put in the work. You have to be dedicated [and] you have to be determined to finish.”

Edward Knowles, an Electrical Engineering major, said he expects “to work hard and be where I need to be and study hard in order to pursue what I really want in life.”

As a part of the orientation experience, students also took part in student success seminars where they gained useful knowledge on everything from the registration process to remaining healthy and safe on campus.
