Mrs. Sandra Fox and three-year old son Rushon, who requires expensive corrective heart surgery, for which funds raised by the Antique Auto Show will be contributed, meets with members of the Antique Auto Club of The Bahamas; L-R Don Pinder, VP & Show Chairman; Brendan Foulkes, President; Murray Forde, Secretary and R. E. Barnes, Chairman, Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation.

Nassau, Bahamas - The Antique Auto Club of The Bahamas is holding its 26th Annual Antique Auto Show and Cook-out at Arawak Cay (Fish Fry area) on Saturday, March 23. In line with previous shows, the proceeds are always donated to a Charity or Organization involving children, recognizing they are the future of our country.  This year’s show has developed into a very special purpose.

One recent Saturday morning while reading the morning paper, Club President Brendan Foulkes was impressed by an article on the Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation and the work they are doing for many young children in The Bahamas. “I never realized that childhood heart disease was so prevalent in the country. As we were just in process of identifying a beneficiary for this year’s Antique Auto Show,’ a light went on’ and I immediately called Murray [Club Secretary] telling him how moved I was by this article and that we needed to arrange a meeting with the Sassoon Heart Foundation”.  A meeting was quickly arranged with Mr. R. E. Barnes, Chairman of the Foundation. As a result, a partnership was forged for this year’s show and Mr. Barnes undertook to identify a candidate.

Rushon Fox is a three–year old boy, who is in need of surgery to repair a Tetralogy of Fallot in his heart as soon as possible. This type of surgery is normally done in Florida, but the Foundation is attempting to bring a surgeon to Nassau to greatly reduce the expense. Mr. Foulkes added; “We feel very good about our role in this. I thank the members of our Show Committee, who all agreed to support an individual as opposed to an organized charity like we normally do.” Part proceeds, however, will also benefit the Bilney Home for Children, which has been a beneficiary of previous shows and needs support.

“The main fund-raising comes from the sale of steak and chicken dinners and here is where we are urging the public’s support” said Club Treasurer Dion Bethell. “1,400 tickets have been printed and are in the hands of most of our members. Some will also be available onsite on the day of the Show”.

In addition to the Fund-raising side, the Show itself promises to be an entertaining event with a large variety of Antique and Special Interest Vehicles that are inspected by a team of judges to decide the winning trophies in 8 different classes. Individuals with such vehicles who may not be members are welcome – and encouraged - to display their rides and enter in the judging.  “Please also note that the Cook-out tickets include a ballot allowing each purchaser to cast a vote for his/her favourite car for the People’s Choice awards” said Don Pinder, Show Chairman. “Please exercise your right to vote and use your ballots. Cash prizes and trophies are awarded for People’s Choice.”

The Antique Auto Club of The Bahamas was formed in 1987 as a hobby club by six men with a common interest in the preservation of vintage vehicles. The hobby has grown locally and the club now has 60 men and women members. While the main purpose remains the hobby, the Club does a lot of giving back to the Community, its Annul Antique Auto Show & Cook-out being its biggest event.
