Nassau, Bahamas - Santa Claus came early for more than one hundred students from the Mabel Walker and Naomi Blatch primary schools as well as children from the Elizabeth Estates Children’s Home, the Nazareth Centre, and the Big Pond Community.

On Friday, December 3rd, 2010, The Bahamas Electricity Corporation (BEC) held its annual Tree Lighting Ceremony. In addition to hosting the event for the children, BEC also makes a donation to local organizations including its two adopted primary schools. This year, The Elizabeth Estates Children’s Home and the Nazareth Centre were the recipients of corporate gifts.

“We are fully aware of the challenges facing many Bahamians and wherever possible, BEC believes it has a social responsibility to assist in the community. Every year we see more and more children from the surrounding area flock to this event and we welcome them with open arms. We are able to show them the true meaning of Christmas especially at a time when many families are struggling to provide,” shared BEC’S General Manager Mr. Kevin Basden.

In addition to outstanding performances by talented students from Mabel Walker and Naomi Blatch Primary Schools, this year BEC staff held a well received talent showcase to entertain their specially invited guests.

The traditional lighting of the trees and BEC’s Administration Building and BEC employees’ fine performances were only outshined by Santa’s arrival. BEC’s Santa bypassed his traditional sleigh in exchange for one of the Corporation’s bucket trucks. Hoisted high in the air, Santa rode in, accompanied by the BEC Shockers Junkanoo Group getting ready for its trip to Bay St. on January 1st, 2011. Santa was welcomed by a screaming crowd of delighted children. Santa also didn’t disappoint. Each child left with a stocking filled with lots of goodies and were treated to a scrumptious pre- Christmas dinner in BEC’S cafeteria.
BEC Staff say the event is what truly kicks off the Christmas Season. For them, it is a reminder that the Christmas season is about the joy of giving and nothing provides more pleasure than having this event for the kids.
