TheBahamasWeekly.com has randomly selected 10 Bahamians
to canvas their opinions on highlights of The Bahamas over the year 2012, as well as ask about the upcoming 40th year of independence for The Bahamas, and the direction of the country.
Their comments will be shared over the coming weeks.

It is our way of highlighting Bahamians in our community, as well as sharing a wide variety of opinions.

Our seventh feature with online personality, TAP of Nassau:

What event do you feel was the most important for The Bahamas in 2012?

One of the most important events for me this year in The Bahamas, was the celebration of the women's suffrage movement. This year marked the 50th anniversary of the movement and it was awesome to see the display downtown, documentaries and symposiums used to educate and honor women like Mary Ingraham, Mable Walker, Georgianna Symonette, Eugenia Lockhart, Dame Dr. Doris Johnson and many others who made it possible for women like me to have rights and to be where I am today.

Who passed away this year that you feel will be 'most missed' and why?

Definitely T'rez Hepburn and Berkley Van Byrd, two of our amazing Bahamian musical and entertainment icons. T'rez will always be remembered as one the MOST amazing Bahamian female performers - she was vibrant, feisty and OWNED ANY stage she was on, but more importantly she was a warm person with a big heart. Berkley Van Byrd was one of those people that helped to put our country on the map alongside the super group T-Connection with their song "Paradise"...They both will be sorely missed.

2013 is the country's 40th anniversary of Independence. What should we be most proud of in the past 40 years?

We should be proud as a nation that after 40 years, which is still very young for a nation, we have managed to excel in many areas that our forefathers may have not even imagined. We have Bahamians succeeding and growing in many areas: sports, medicine, law, engineering, music...things our grandparents never got the opportunity to do or even try. We are no longer just that tiny dot on the map. We've made the WORLD pay attention and notice us, we've become the ENVY of many nations around the world, and we can be proud of that for sure!

What/who do you feel is a Bahamian National Treasure and why?

The Bahamian natural treasure is OUR PEOPLE and our natural environment. Our islands, our waters, our coral reefs...are the most enviable in the world, so I think it is very important that we protect them and preserve them. Sometimes, we take it for granted because we are just so used to them, but it is VITAL that we implement laws and uphold the ones that are already in place to make sure the natural beauty and environment is preserved for generations to come. You can have the most beautiful country with the most resources, but if the people don't have a mind to appreciate it and if the people are not willing to seize opportunities, to be united and to push beyond the status quo, then it is a waste. Bahamians...we are talented, we are spirited, we are resilient...we are without a doubt, the GREATEST asset this country has. We need to ensure that this asset is put to use, in the right way, and is allowed to flourish.

Looking forward, where do you feel the country still needs to improve and why?

Going forward, I would like to see the country make more investments in education. The powers that be have been pushing tourism, which is great, but tourism like many other industries can change at the drop of a hat. We must focus on educating our people, because knowledge is a priceless gift that NO ONE, no economy, can take away once it is instilled. I would also love to see more community centers erected that offer programs (especially in the inner city) that would help to keep younger kids from getting involved in drugs and violent crime. I would also like to see more support for performing arts in this country. We need persons to invest in the dreams of our young artists and thespians. Overall, I'd like to see more young persons with fresh ideas be involved with decision-making and the creative processes in this country. We also need to be more of a PROACTIVE instead of a REACTIVE nation.

Do you have a Personal Highlight for 2012?

A personal highlight for me this year would have to be, being a part of the week of activities that were created to honour Sir. Sidney Poitier. Being chosen to tour across schools on the island and speak about Sir Sidney, the inspiration he's had on my life, all he's achieved as a Bahamian and what he means to our country, is a week I will never forget. Seeing the shock and eagerness on the faces of so many students who knew so little about him and his legacy, and being able to impart knowledge to them is something I will always cherish. And of course, the moment I was able to be a part of the actual Bridge Re-naming ceremony in his honour, being able to see this icon up close and personal...was simply...amazing.
