Nassau, Bahamas - In commemoration of The Bahamas’ Fortieth Anniversary of Independence and consistent with the theme of this year’s celebrations, “Bridge to the Future…The Journey Continues”, The National Independence Committee will pay tribute and recognition to all School Patrons on Tuesday, April 16, 2013.

Students throughout The Bahamas with the guidance of their teachers are expected to perform recitations, read biographies and tell the life stories of many of our great Pioneers in Education and persons who made significant contributions in the field of Education such as Community Leaders, Benefactors and Supporters. On this day, all public schools and participating private schools will hold student-led assemblies which highlight the contributions of their patron to national development.  In instances where the school has no patron, the school is expected to honour the founding principal, or one who has served with distinction.  Some schools have opted to celebrate outstanding alumni or have prominent individuals speak on the school’s contribution to the community. Schools will also stage an exhibition of the patron’s life and invite the individual, if still alive to attend the event or members of their families.

Prime Minister of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas and Member of Parliament for the Centreville Constituency, The Right Honourable Perry Christie will join the administrators, teachers and students at the Columbus Primary School for their celebration of Patron’s Day.      Columbus Primary School will recognize the contributions of its sixteen former principals including: Samuel Guy Pinder, Randy Conliffe, Carlton E. Francis, Mrs. Katrina Cartwright, Bishop Sam Greene, Mrs. Shirley Greene, Mrs. Dorothy Darville, Mrs. Mavis Collie, and Mrs. Thelma Cambridge.

A. F. Adderley Junior High School will honour its patron the late Alfred Francis Adderley, who was the first Black Bahamian lawyer and father to the late Paul L Adderley, Cabinet Minister and Statesman.  Members of the Adderley family will be in attendance.

In Abaco, schools are also enthusiastically planning to honour patrons or celebrate the legacy of schools in the various communities.  According to Education Officer Sandy Edwards, their effort is a community based initiative which will involve Past PTA Presidents; Former District Superintendents and others who will speak about the schools’ legacies in the respective settlements.

The Catholic Schools and the Bahamas Association of Independent Secondary Schools (BAISS) in The Bahamas are also participating in the celebration honouring their patrons and legacies.  They too, will be highlighting their schools contributions to national development.
