The Nurses Association of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas (NACB) Joins the Walden community in its seventh Global Day of Service by targeting chronic non communicable diseases (CNCD’s) through Health screening and Education and  Exercise activities for Bahamians.

Now more than ever, The need for social change is evident in our communities, particularly in the improving the health of Bahamians. The NACB partnered with Walden University to put its mission of effecting positive social change into action on Saturday, October 6 , 2012 by providing  health screening and education for Bahamians. This year the NACB stepped up its fight against NCD’s by the addition of an exercise demonstration and activity.

Walden’s Global Day of Service illustrates the worldwide impact social change agents can have in one 24 hour period. Nurses in New Providence joined thousands of Walden volunteers in hundreds of cities around the world to help improve their communities by giving back.

Bahamian health reports suggest that nearly 60 percent of deaths among Bahamians are related to chronic non communicable diseases (CNCD’s). In an effort to diminish the impact of CNCD’s on the Bahamian community, The Nurses Association organised a Health Screening and Education initiative to bring awareness to the prevalence of these life style diseases and promote positive lifestyle changes.  Through this project, nearly two hundred citizens were made aware of their health statuses received counselling and participated in a dance fitness routine. The Nurses and mall patrons participated in an exercise routine showcasing, inexpensive ways of increasing physical activity.

The event was held on Saturday October 7th from 10:00am to 3:00pm at The Mall at Marathon, Robinson and Marathon Roads. Three Walden alumni Geanna Bethel, Ericka Thompson, Pesephone Munnings participated in the initiative.

Nurses volunteering assessed blood pressures, blood glucose, cholesterol levels, height, weight and BMI; and provided counselling and referral to appropriate agencies. Other volunteers assisted with setup photography and registration. All volunteers  may have their hours of service published on Walden’s Service Network.

The Nurses Association of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas is the premier voice for the profession of nursing in The Bahamas. It is an independent, non-governmental, non-profit professional organisation that influences policies through local, regional and international networks.  The mission of the NACB is to promote the highest possible standards of nursing practice, encourage professional and educational advancement for nurses, and to ensure that all people irrespective of nationality, race, colour or social origin may have optimal nursing care.
