Nassau, Bahamas - As a part of its mission statement and commitment to providing quality community based educational, leadership and emotional support services to school age girls, S.T.R.A.W. Inc.TM Center for Young Women©has once again joined in the annual recognition and celebration of the International Day of the Girl. This year, S.T.R.A.W. Inc.TM Center for Young Women© led the local movement by celebrating the 3rd International Day of the Girl with sixth grade female students of T.G. Glover Primary School on Thursday, 9 October 2014.

Using its annual theme of: “Proud to Be a Girl!”, S.T.R.A.W. Inc.TM Center for Young Women© highlighted the unique needs of girls and recognized the international challenges of activists such as Malala Yousafzai (a Pakistani school girl and 2014 Nobel Peace Prize Winner who received a bullet in her head for vocalizing the importance of advancing the right of education for girls and women).

On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170 to declare October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child, establishing a day to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.Citing that girls face discrimination and violence every day across the world, the International Day of the Girl Child: “focuses attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights.”

In reserving a day for advocacy and action by and for girls, the UN has signaled its commitment to end gender stereotypes, discrimination, violence, and economic disparities that disproportionately affect girls.

As a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization dedicated to the advancement and development of girls to help them transition as positive contributors to the Bahamian society and become dynamic agents of change, S.T.R.A.W. Inc. TM Center for Young Women©is pleased to be a part of this global movement.
