Nassau, Bahamas - Using a signature platform designed to expose
students to the professional diversity and dynamism within the field of business,
the Chief Executive Officer of the Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) Mr.
Leon Williams recently challenged students at The College of The Bahamas to be
imaginative and resourceful in the pursuit of their dreams.
Mr. Williams was the keynote speaker at the
opening ceremony for the School of Business’ Business Week activities held at
the Harry C. Moore Library and Information Centre at The College’s Oakes Field
Campus. The theme was “Embracing Innovation and Technology in a Changing
Business Environment”.
In a passionate address to the College
community, Mr. Williams implored students to remain focused on their higher
education goals and the pursuit of excellence.
“We all have to reach a point in our lives
when we can say ‘it doesn’t matter.’ So, you have to start practicing that now
because almost everything we have today in this world comes from just a handful
of people who dared to dream,” he said, asserting that global competition
continues to increase.
BTC has continued to nurture a close partnership
with The College and supports higher education through student scholarships and
collaboration in campus life activities.
During his address, Mr. Williams also
explained the myriad developments in the field of technology and
telecommunications over the years and the cascading effects of such changes on
the global marketplace. He also encouraged students to ignore negative peer
pressure.

“When you know who you are and you know your
value, what people say about you won’t matter…You will never amount to anything
if you allow your life to be dictated by other people. You are the only person
on earth who can use your ability,” he added.
Executive Vice President and Vice President
of Academic Affairs at The College Dr. Earla Carey-Baines explained the significance
of Business Week, a staple on The College’s spring calendar of events.
“Thanks to staff and faculty in the School of
Business, Business Week provides an opportunity for majors in our programmes to
interact with industry persons, to interact with alumni, and to get real-life
experiences, bringing theory and practice together,” she told guests at the opening
ceremony.
During the week, the College community was
engaged in various activities including panel discussions on relevant and
timely business-related topics, a student speech competition and lectures.
