Deldra Sands was awarded a $4,000 scholarship to aid in the completion of her Bachelor’s degree at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Savanna, Georgia from the president of Bahamas Sports Management yesterday, July 15.

The Sports Management Company trade as Premier Plus Consultants, a company that recently branched out by introducing a Scholarship Awards Program as a continuance of their support to the students of the Bahamas.

The company’s website states: “As we all know, the cost of education has continued to rise and the Bahamian students’ challenge to stay competitive in a global market is becoming very restrictive and overwhelming. Our vision statement, ‘Preparing today’s students for tomorrow’s opportunities,’ shows our creative commitment to do our part to assist our young people.”

Patrick Knowles, President of Bahamas Sports Management explained that the company is a private company that provides services for university support to their members. Knowles confirmed that the type of support given to parents of those aspiring to attend university includes using the individual’s strengths, weaknesses and challenges to place them in the best environment, whether it is a boarding school first or a specialized school.

Knowles stated that this year the company introduced these scholarships to not only their members but others who were seeking financial aid. “This year we offered two scholarships for Primary School students about to go into grade 7, one scholarship for junior high students going into high school and one for a student either continuing their university studies or starting a university,” Knowles explained.

Sands shared with The Freeport News her delight at having been selected from so many applicants for this much needed assistance. The recipient is presently studying Dramatic Writing and is a portrait artist.

Sands aspires to be a screen writer after she completes her studies.

The student said she was “excited and honoured to have been given this scholarship. I know there are many other students who work hard like me. It is relieving to know I have some help.”

The President of the Company noted that Sands was chosen because the committee were sensitive to the big challenges artists and writers have to be recognized, and were impressed she took on that challenge. Knowles acknowledged that the country needs persons willing to study outside the box as it will allow us a balanced society.

Knowles added that Sands selection was also due to her having a 4.0 GPA and being involved in the community for many years.
