Nassau, Bahamas - Thirty campers were immersed into the world of media this summer, thanks to a collaboration between the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture and True Vision Media Group.  Through the government's free summer programme, children ages 8 to 15 learned about the importance of media; social responsibility and the role of media; careers in media; interviewing skills; writing and presentation skills; how to set up camera equipment and accessories; and photography.

The camp also contained general and social competency components that allowed the children to combine learning media skills with fun and games, creative writing, conflict resolution, and saving and budgeting skills

Felicity Ingraham, president of True Vision Media, said her company was formed with the intent purpose of injecting more good news into the national news, while giving young people a greater voice in the media.  She said the camp successfully achieved the latter goal, and more importantly, "many of the campers show true promise for having careers in media, which is a vast profession."  Terrance Gilbert and Trey Arnett assisted in executing the lessons in photography and cinematography.

The camp culminated with the production of a Public Service Announcement, which will be aired on ZNS television.  The PSA was shot during an island tour of New Providence.  The campers took the opportunity to say "Happy Independence", but also to let the nation hear what the children have to say about their country.  They touched on serious issues, such as unemployment, drugs, crime, physical and sexual abuse, and the lack of opportunities for them to have more of a voice in their country.  The camp changed that, by creating an opportunity for all of the Bahamas, and the world to hear what they have to say.
