Nassau, Bahamas - Bahamian artist Stan Burnside visited LCIS this week to give a presentation about his artwork to a group of visual arts students.  Mr. Burnside talked about examples of his work that represent a fascination for strong women in the matriarchal culture of the Bahamas, a passion for local culture, Bahamian ancestors and history.  The presentation was performance-based; accompanying him was guitarist Pat Carey (of the group “Baha Men”) and master drummer Reuben “Ruppapum” Deleveaux.  The audience, made up of students and staff, was enthralled with Stan’s very personal reflection on his work while at the same time being expertly lulled by the live music performed during the session.  Bahamian artist Antonius Roberts and Head of the Visual Arts Department Sandra Illingworth teacher arranged the visit of Mr. Burnside as part of the school’s Art Institute program.

Mr. Roberts commented on the visit, “Stan Burnside is a ‘true landscape artist,’ painting the ‘landscape of his mind’, he has provided some incredible insights for the students. He is an inspiration to all and I am sure the students have been moved by the entire visual and musical presentation.”

He added, “There are so many renowned artists who reside in The Bahamas, it is so wonderful when students are afforded the opportunity to meet them and learn about their work. Mr. Burnside has been so generous with his time and talents; we are delighted with his support of the LCIS Art Institute.”

Grade 11 Student, Bernard Farquharson commented on the whole experience, "It was so interesting to hear Mr. Burnside present his work and listen to his inspirations – and it was a real bonus to listen to those amazing musicians too."

Burnside received his BFA and MFA from the University of Pennsylvania. In the 1970s he worked in the United States painting and designing album covers for notable R&B artists. After returning to the Bahamas, he distinguished himself as an art teacher at the College of The Bahamas, as a cartoonist with SideBurns commentary, as a principle designer for the Saxon Superstars and later the One Family Junkanoo groups, and as a founder and co-creator of the artist collectives B-CAUSE and Jammin. In addition to his early shows in The Bahamas, Burnside has exhibited widely in venues such as Paris and Cagnes-sur-Mer, France, Ecuador, Bermuda, Cuba, Washington DC, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic. His work can be found in collections such as the Museum of Americas in Washington and the Museo de Arte Moderno, Santo Domingo.

The LCIS Art Institute is an exciting initiative for Grades K-12 that links renowned Bahamian artists with LCIS students and allows for practical exchange while simultaneously delivering a more rigorous art history and visual arts program.
