Nassau, Bahamas – 13th March, 2016 – Officials of the The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology are deeply saddened to learn of the shooting death of a 12th grade, male student of the C. C. Sweeting Senior High School. Heartfelt condolences are extended to the family of the victim and our thoughts and prayers are with them and the C.C. Sweeting Senior High School family as well.

While the incident occurred outside school hours, we are nonetheless concerned about the well-being and safety of all students. Reports are that the young man was walking in the Flamingo Gardens area, when a vehicle approached, he was shot and the occupants sped off. This incident comes on the heels of the death of a 10th grade, female student and both were the result of violence.

As is customary in such instances, a team of counselors will be deployed to the school on Monday morning to offer counseling services to the students and staff.

We are beyond dismayed by the series of tragic events that occurred within 24hours of each other. We reflect on all the students we have lost to crime and violence and we strongly appeal to all citizens to come together to put an end to the scourge of violence that is claiming the lives of so many of our young people. The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology will continue to promote a spirit of peace and love in our schools and community and encourage all Bahamians to do likewise.
