Nassau, Bahamas Pan-Hellenic Council to induct three members into the Fraternal Hall of Fame

Nassau, Bahamas - The Board of Directors of the Nassau, Bahamas Council of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc. are pleased to announce that three outstanding members of the Bahamian Fraternal community will be inducted into the Nassau, Bahamas Pan-Hellenic Council, Hall of Fame:

The 2010 Inductee is: Mr. Cornel Mortimer,member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., the 2011 Inductee is: Mrs. Mavis Johnson-Collie, member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the 2012 Inductee is: Ms. Myra E. Mitchell, member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

The Nassau, Bahamas Pan-Hellenic Council established The Bahamas Greek Hall of Fame in 2004 under the presidency of Mrs. Cyndi Williams-Rahming. The purpose is to recognize outstanding members of the Fraternal Movement in The Bahamas. Individuals inducted into The Nassau, Bahamas Pan-Hellenic Council - Hall of Fame would have made valuable contributions towards the fraternal movement and community development in the local community which had an impact internationally.

The Nassau, Bahamas Pan-Hellenic Council – Greek Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held on Thursday, November 29th, 2012 – 7pm, The Montague Gardens, East Bay Street. The Ceremony is FREE and open to the general public.

2010 Hall of Fame Inductee:Frater Cornel Mortimer, a charter member of the Pi Xi Chapter of Nassau, Bahamas and the Kappa Lambda Lambda Chapter of Freeport, Grand Bahama of Omega PsiPhi Fraternity, Inc. Cornel was initiated into the fraternity at the Theta Sigma Chapter at Dillard University on December 3, 1970. His awards include: Omega Founders’ Award Recipient and Omega Superior Citizen’s Award. Locally, Frater Cornel held the offices of: Keeper of Records and Seal; Keeper of Finance, Keeper of Peace and 2nd Vice-Basileus. Internationally, he was a member of the Omega 13thDistrict Advisory Board, Member, Omega Life Membership Foundation, Member,International Planning Committee, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Leadership Conference and former Deputy District Representative, 13thDistrict. Frater Cornel served as Past Secretary and Chapter’s Representative to the Nassau, Bahamas Pan-Hellenic Council, The Pi Xi Chapter’s Chairman, Harlequin Masked Ball Committee,Chairman, Social Action Committee and Chairman, Omega Fellowship Committee.

Frater Cornel holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and Minor in Accounting from Dillard University, Executive Management Certificate, The University of Miami and a Labour Relation Diploma, McHari Institute. Frater Cornel is a member of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity and a Lay Reader, St. Mary’s Anglican Church.He is employed as Director of Human Resources, Bahamasair Holdings Ltd. from 2004– present. He is also the President and owner of Mortimer Candies. He is married to Beverly Mortimer and has 2 sons, a daughter in law and 3 grand children.

2011 Hall of Fame Inductee:Soror Mavis Johnson-Collie, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., had the honour of advancing the humanitarian thrusts of Black Greek Organizations in The Bahamas and around the region in a big way. During 2006 - 2008, she was charged with the awesome responsibility of serving as president of both the Nassau Bahamas Pan Hellenic Council and the local chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. During 2006-2008, her term as president of AKA was her third such term in twenty years having served two consecutive terms in the early 1980’s. She was the recipient of oneof the first Distinguished Citizen awards by the Local NPHC in recognition of her outstanding contribution to her sorority and community.

She has the distinction of being the first member from the local chapter to be appointed to one of the Sorority’s International committees where she represented the International Region. Johnson-Collie also served as the International Region’s elected representative to the Sorority’s Nominating Committee. She is a member of the Zion South Beach Baptist Church, a former Junior Achievement Advisor and a former member of The Bahamas Girls Brigade Council. She is an Attorney at Law and currently works with her husband in the firm Collie & Collie Law Chambers. She was initiated into the sorority at the State University of New York’s Brockport campus in spring of 1982, received a MA degree in Public Communication from American University in Washington D.C; an LLB degree from Wolverhampton University,England and studied for the bar at the Eugene Dupuch Law School Nassau, The Bahamas. She is married to former Member of Parliament and former Cabinet Minister Sidney Collie and they have two daughters.

2012 Hall of Fame Inductee: Soror Myra E. Mitchell is a Diamond-Life member of The Nassau, Bahamas Alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She held the position of President for the term 1998 - 2002. Ever since her initiation, Ms. Mitchell has been very active, and has held numerous other positions in her chapter, namely, Vice President,Chair/Program Planning & Development, Chair/ Nomination Committee, and Leader of Minerva Circle. She has chaired and served on many other chapter committees.She has also served on many Southern Region conference committees. When the Nassau, Bahamas Pan-Hellenic Council was chartered, Myra E. Mitchell held the position of Charter Parliamentarian; and has also been bestowed the title -Distinguished Charter Parliamentarian. Soror Myra is a Founding Director of the Bahamas Primary School Student of the Year Foundation. She is Vice-President Emerita of the Foundation.

Soror Mitchell is employed with The Bahamas Telecommunications Company as IT Project Office Manager. She has matriculated at The University of Texas at Austin, St.Edwards University (BSc. - Computer Sciences), and the University of Miami (M.B.A.). She has also earned the designation of Certified Manager (CM) from James Madison University, Virginia. Ms. Myra E. Mitchell attends St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, and resides on the island of New Providence, The Bahamas. Ms. Mitchell is the daughter of Mr. C. Leroy Mitchell (deceased) and Dame Paula L. Mitchell.

Previous Bahamas Greek Hall of Fame Inductees:The previous inductees in the Nassau, Bahamas Pan-Hellenic Council –Bahamas Greek Hall of Fame are: 2004 - Ricardo P. Deveaux (Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.), 2005 – William ‘Bill’ Wallace (Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.), 2007 – Peter L. Mitchell (Omega Psi Phi Fraternity,Inc.), 2008 – Frank “Pancho” Rahming (Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.)and 2009 – Senator Sharon Wilson (Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.). The Nassau, Bahamas Pan-Hellenic Council is the local coalition body of the historically African-American Fraternities and Sororities. The local council was chartered on February 5, 1995.
