NASSAU, The Bahamas – In keeping with its commitment to aid the Robert Smith Ward at Sandilands Rehabilitation Center, Rebecca Chapter No. 4, Order of the Eastern Star, Prince Hall Affiliated recently planted a garden of perennials and hibiscus in the Ward’s atrium and also donated goodly numbers of clothing, shoes, socks and underwear to residents there.

Two years ago Rebecca Chapter No. 4 adopted the Robert Smith Ward and since then the Chapter and Ward have had a very good relationship. Rebecca Chapter No. 4 has committed itself to assisting the ward on a long term basis.

“We are overjoyed to have brought some ‘color’ to the residents of the Robert Smith Ward by way of spring flowers,” said Sis. Tanya Smith-Cartwright, the twenty-second Worthy Matron of Rebecca Chapter No. 4. “We planted that garden with love and every plant represents our commitment to our charity at Sandilands.

“We know that the clothing, shoes and other items will go a long way in assisting the residents of the ward and we look forward to the next opportunity to help. One of the tenets of our organization is ‘love, relief and truth’ and Rebecca is a firm believer of the same. By this we are taught to regard everyone as one family - the high, the low, the rich and the poor.”

Besides its work with the Robert Smith Ward at Sandilands, Rebecca Chapter No. 4 also has a well-known soup kitchen, “Rebecca’s Mystery Soup Kitchen” which operates in the Bain’s and Grant’s Town area. Chapter members will set up the soup kitchen unannounced and feed scores of people of the area who are in need and also give out clothing and shoes.

Rebecca Chapter No. 4 was founded on June 12, 1964 by Past Grand Master, James Morley and his wife, Past Grand Matron, Mary Morley. The chapter is a part of the Order of the Eastern Star which is an Adoptive Rite to Freemasonry and a Prince Hall Affiliate.

Headed up by Worthy Matron Smith-Cartwright and Associate Matron, Tia Charlow-Moss, the Chapter celebrates its 54th anniversary this year.
